The only Congressman ever impeached was Senator William Blount of Tennessee. He was acquitted because the Senate decided that it did not have jurisdiction as
Legislators are not civil officers under the Constitution.
Each house of Congress has a constitutional method to remove members.
Two individuals have been elected to Congress after serving as President of the United States.
John Quincy Adams was President from 1825-1829, and then served in the US House from 1831 until his death in 1858. Before becoming President, Adams had been a US Senator.
Andrew Johnson was President from 1865-1869, and then served as Senator from March of 1875 until his death in July of 1875. Before becoming President, Johnson had been a US Representative, US Senator, Governor of Tennessee, and Vice-President of the United States.
In Play: The above trivium is correct if you specify United States Congress. John Tyler was elected to the Confederate States House of Representatives but died before serving.
Not in play: Yes, I was actually going to include that factoid in my post, but I totally forgot until after the editing deadline had passed.
Carry on.
Australian film director Russell Mulcahy rose to prominence in the early 1980s, during the early years of MTV, as a director of music videos. Mulcahy directed many of the iconic videos of that time, including the Buggles’ “Video Killed the Radio Star,” the Vapors’ “Turning Japanese,” Duran Duran’s “Hungry Like the Wolf,” Billy Joel’s “Allentown,” Elton John’s “I’m Still Standing,” and Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart.”
According to rock historian Paul Fowles, (Bohemian Rhapsody (1975)) is “widely credited as the first global hit single for which an accompanying (music) video was central to the marketing strategy”. Rolling Stone has said of Bohemian Rhapsody: “Its influence cannot be overstated, practically inventing the music video seven years before MTV went on the air.”
Clocking in at 5:55, record executives said that the song “Bohemian Rhapsody” would never become a hit, as it was too long and the current format of most radio stations would not allow that. DJ Kenny Everett of Capital FM (London) was given a copy of the song which he teased bits of on his show. After fielding multiple calls, Everett played the song in its entirety, eventually playing it 14 times in one day.
Bohemian Rhapsody was released in 1975 on Queen’s album (33⅓ RPM), A Night at the Opera. When it was released as a 45 RPM single, it was on the A side. On the B side was I’m in Love with My Car which was also on A Night at the Opera. I’m in Love with My Car was the album’s only song written entirely by drummer Roger Taylor.
All four members of the rock band Queen held college degrees:
- Vocalist Freddie Mercury had a degree in graphic art and design from Ealing Art College
- Guitarist Brian May has a bachelor of science in physics, and a PhD in astrophysics, both from Imperial College London
- Drummer Roger Taylor initially studied dentistry at London Medical College, but changed fields of study, and earned a bachelor of science in biology from East London Polytechnic
- Bassist John Deacon has a degree in electronics from Chelsea College
John Deacon took an interest in electronics at an early age, reading magazines on the subject and building small devices, including the modification of a reel-to-reel tape deck to record music directly from the radio. He joined Queen in 1971 on the strength of his musical and electronic skills, particularly the home-made Deacy (Deacon) Amp which guitarist Brian May used to create guitar orchestras throughout Queen’s career. Deacon used the amplifier circuit board from a Supersonic PR80 portable radio found in a builder’s skip which was fitted into a speaker cabinet and powered by a 9-volt battery. The amplifier had no volume or tone controls and for most of its history it was never broken thus never repaired.
The all-time best-selling album in the United Kingdom is Greatest Hits, a compilation by Queen. It was released on October 26, 1981, and has thus far sold over 25 million copies. Included in the album are such singles as “We Will Rock You”, “Fat Bottom Girls”, “Somebody to Love”, and, of course, “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
Queen Elizabeth II was both the longest-reigning female monarch in British history, and the longest-reigning British monarch of all.
The reign of Queen Elizabeth II lasted 70 years and 214 days.
The reign of King Louis XIV lasted 72 years and 110 days.
Louis XIV viewed himself as the direct representative of God, endowed with a divine right to wield the absolute power of the monarchy. To illustrate his status, he chose the sun as his emblem and cultivated the image of an omniscient and infallible “Roi-Soleil” (“Sun King”) around whom the entire realm orbited.
“Sun King” was a Beatles song, appearing on the British band’s 1969 Abbey Road album.
In the Shinto religion of Japan, the Emperor is considered to be the direct descendant of the sun goddess Amaterasu.

Aphrodite, the ancient Greek goddess of beauty and love, is associated with love, lust, beauty, pleasure, passion, and procreation. Aphrodite was syncretized with the Roman goddess Venus. Aphrodite is a major deity in modern Neopagan religions, including the Church of Aphrodite, Wicca, and Hellenismos.
An aphrodisiac is a substance, usually a food or drug, that is believed to cause sexual desire in people. The word itself was named after Aphrodite.
Many different examples of aphrodisiacs have appeared throughout history. One such example from the Arab culture is ambrien, a substance found in the gut of sperm whales. Another example, from India, is bufotenin, which is found in the skin and glands of Bufo toads. And Chinese folk medicine touts the virtues of horny goat weed.
Legend has it that Casanova, the Italian adventurer and perhaps history’s most famous lover, slurped down dozens of oysters before bedding down with his partners.
According to WebMD, no food has been scientifically proven to stimulate the human sex organs. But foods and the act of eating can suggest sex to the mind, which in turn can help stimulate desire in the body.
According to WebMD, the following foods provide sensual suggestions which, in turn, may have aphrodisiac qualities.
Nuts. Almonds, walnuts, and hazelnuts in particular help you better pump blood throughout your body. That may improve your cardiovascular health, blood pressure, and, for men, help you get and keep an erection. Eating 2-3 ounces of pistachios each day also may help.
Avocados. It’s one of the few fruits that contain healthy unsaturated fats. One benefit is avocados can help keep your hormones in balance. Avocados also have folate, a vitamin needed to make histamine, a compound released during orgasms.
Pomegranate. It’s called a superfood because it’s packed with antioxidants. Pomegranate juice may super-size your sex life, too. One study found that drinking a glass a day for 2 weeks improved testosterone levels in men and women. The hormone is plentiful in men and is needed for both sexes to kick sex drive into high gear.
Chocolate. Ancient Aztecs considered it a powerful aphrodisiac. Chocolate contains the compound phenylethylamine, aka the “chemical of love.” But chocolate’s power as an aphrodisiac is probably more myth than reality.
Berries. Blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, and raspberries are good for your overall health, and they also may help men keep erections. Researchers found that foods rich in flavonoids – nutrients that give fruits and vegetables their color and are also found in citrus fruits and red wine – are linked to a lower risk of erectile dysfunction. Also, blackberries contain zinc, which may play a role in regulating testosterone production.
Alcohol. A drink or two may lower your inhibitions and put you in the mood for romance. One study found that women who drank a glass or two of red wine a day reported more desire, lubrication, and overall sexual satisfaction than nondrinkers.
Rock and roll singer Fats Domino had a major hit in 1956 with the song “Blueberry Hill;” his version is considered to be one of the greatest songs in rock history. The song was originally written in 1940, and earlier recordings of it were also hits, including versions by the Glenn Miller Orchestra (1940) and Louis Armstrong (1949).
