Trivia Dominoes II — Play Off the Last Bit of Trivia — continued! (Part 1)

Albany heads the alphabetical list of state capitals, followed by Annapolis, Atlanta, Augusta, and Austin. The last three on the list are Tallahassee, Topeka, and Trenton.

Three U.S. state capitals are named after U.S. presidents:

  • Jackson, Mississippi
  • Lincoln, Nebraska
  • Madison, Wisconsin

Jefferson City is the capital of Missouri and is named after Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the US.
That’s my play.

:smack: In my defense, I didn’t say “only three.” (Just flat-out missed Jefferson City in the list I consulted.)

In play:

The 1972 film 1776, adapted from the 1969 Broadway musical of the same name, depicted the debate on American independence, and the writing and signing of the Declaration of Independence, by the Continental Congress. The film starred William Daniels as John Adams, Virginia Vestoff as Abigail Adams, Ken Howard as Thomas Jefferson, Blythe Danner as Martha Jefferson, and Howard Da Silva as Benjamin Franklin.

Blythe, California is one of the hottest cities outside the tropics. The temperature high averages over 90 on almost half the days of the year, and the record is 124. Blythe is home to 20,000 people, where
i-10 ccrosses the Colorado river at the Arizona state line.

The name “Colorado River” means red (or reddish) river in Spanish. There are two Colorado Rivers in the USA.

The Colorado River (the main river) is 1,450 miles long and is the 5th-longest river in the USA. It starts in the central Rocky Mountains of Colorado, then flows generally southwest across the Colorado Plateau and through the Grand Canyon before reaching Lake Mead and the Hoover Dam on the Arizona–Nevada border, and then flows south to form the boundary between Arizona and California and across I-10 near Blythe CA before heading into Mexico towards the Gulf of California.

The Colorado River (of Texas) is 970 miles long and is the 11th-longest river in the USA. It starts in Dawson County, Texas, and flows southeast through Austin and to the Gulf of Mexico.

The (main) Colorado River was first named by Father Eusebio Francisco Kino, a geographer and explorer of the late-1600s and early 1700s — in his maps and reports he was the first to apply the name Rio Colorado according to existing records. His 1701 map, “Paso por Tierra a la California,” is the first known map to label the river as the Colorado. Still, its name was not made official until a 1921 Congress Resolution.

The Colorado River of Texas was named by European explorers, and exactly when that was done is not recorded.

I want to add maps of the two rivers. They’re at the bottom.

“Eusebio Francisco Kino” is the Spanish version of the name of the Italian Jesuit priest, missionary, geographer, explorer, cartographer and astronomer. He was born in what is now the Italian Tyrol, and the Italian version of his name is Eusebio Francesco Chini. His family were ethnic Germans and his name was originally Eusebius Franz Kühn. The Spanish version is frequently used since he is best known for his 30 years of work in New Spain, from 1681 to 1711.

Members of the Roman Catholic religious order, the Society of Jesus, are referred to as Jesuits.

The order was founded by Ignatius of Loyola in 1540; Ignatius had a military background, and the Jesuits’ founding documents refer to it as being an order for “whoever desires to serve as a soldier of God” – due in part to this, the Jesuits are sometimes referred to as “God’s soldiers,” “God’s marines,” and “the Company.”

Jesuits are the largest single religious order in the Catholic Church. In the 16th century, early followers named themselves “The Company of Jesus,” and they were nicknamed “God’s Marines” for their willingness to go anywhere in the world at the pope’s command.

Pope Francis is the first Jesuit priest to become supreme pontiff, and incorporated some of the symbolism of his former Order in his papal coat of arms.

NFL tight end Russ Francis played 13 years in the league, for two teams, the New England Patriots and the San Francisco 49ers. He won a Super Bowl with the 49ers in 1984, in Super Bowl XIX, a 38-16 victory over Dan Marino and the Miami Dolphins. That would be Dan Marino’s one and only appearance in a Super Bowl.

Dan Marino is likely the greatest NFL player to have never won a Super Bowl. But there are many other greats in that category too.

Eleven states have towns named Miami, not all of the same origin. There were two tribes if native people who now use the same spelling. One of them around Lake Okeechobee, Florida, and the other in Ohio, Indiana and Michigan. The Ohio Miami tribe has been relocated in Oklahoma.

Miami University in Oxford OH is 1,100 miles north of Miami FL (map >> https://is.gd/O0NPFK).

Miami University is one of the original eight Public Ivy schools, a group of publicly funded universities considered as providing a quality of education comparable to those of the Ivy League. It is renowned for its campus’ beauty, having been called “The most beautiful campus that ever there was” by Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Robert Frost.

Miami University is located in the Miami Valley, a valley formed around the Great Miami River in southwest Ohio. The Great Miami River, named Msimiyamithiipi in the Shawnee language, is named for the Miami people, an Algonquian-speaking Native American people who lived in the region during the early days of European settlement. They were forced to relocate to the west to escape European-American settlement pressure.

Miami FL is named for the Mayaimi people, a Native American people who lived around Lake Mayaimi. Lake Mayaimi is now Lake Okeechobee. Mayaimi, meaning “big water,” is the oldest known name for Lake Okeechobee, as reported in the 16th century, by Hernando de Escalante Fontaneda.

Lake Okeechobee is the largest freshwater lake in the state of Florida. Due to several instances of hurricanes causing disastrous storm surges of the lake’s waters, the lake is now almost completely surrounded by the Herbert Hoover Dike, which is roughly 143 miles long, and averages 30 feet in height.

Not in play, nitpick: Pope Francis is not a former Jesuit Is Pope Francis still a Jesuit?
"there is no question that he is still a Jesuit. While canon law does not say anything specific about a religious who becomes a pope, it is clear that a religious who becomes a bishop is still a member of his religious community but in a different way. The pertinent canons applied to Bergoglio when he first became a bishop, and they apply to him now as the bishop of Rome.
Canon 705 is clear: “A religious raised to the episcopate remains a member of his institute…”
Back in play:

While Herbert Hoover was seen as indifferent to the sufferings of ordinary people in the Great Depression, with “Hooverville” shantytowns named derisively for him, he was actually a concerned humanitarian. As head of the American Relief Administration (ARA), he provided food for millions in Europe after World War I. When asked if he was not helping Bolshevism by providing relief during the Russian famine of 1921-22, Hoover replied, “twenty million people are starving. Whatever their politics, they shall be fed!” After World War II, he began a school meals program in the American and British occupation zones of Germany; the program served 3,500,000 children.

Neither is Russ Francis!

In play: Herbert Hoover’s Presidential Library is in West Branch IA. It is one of fourteen presidential libraries run by the National Archives and Records Administration: Hoover, FDR, Truman, Ike, JFK, LBJ, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, W, and Obama.

I’ve been to them all except for JFK, Ford, Clinton, W, and Obama.

Pitcher Whitey Ford spent his entire Hall of Fame career with the Yankees, and won 25 games in 1961, but that is not the Yankee record for wins by a pitcher named Ford. In 1910, a Yankee pitcher from Bandon, Manitoba won 26 games – his name was Russ Ford.
