The Hudson’s Bay Company is the oldest corporation in Canada. In 1670 it was established as a fur trading company, eventually outlasting all its competitors. The original English royal charter granted the company a monopoly over the Hudson Bay and it’s drainage, an area considerably larger than most Canadian Provinces.

The American Fur Company, incorporated in New York state on April 6, 1808 by John Jacob Astor, dominated the fur trade of the central and western United States during the first third of the 19th century. Its notable competitors included the North West Company and the Hudson’s Bay Company.

By 1830, the American Fur Company monopolized the fur trade in the United States, but fashion trends soon changed and the fur trade declined. John Jacob Astor withdrew from the company in 1834.

By 1821, the North West Company was defunct.
By 1847, the American Fur Company was defunct.

HBC, the Hudson’s Bay Company, still operates today. It owns Saks Fifth Avenue, which it acquired in 2013.

During the decade of the 1960s, the boys name ‘Jacob’ did not appear on the list of the 200 most popular baby boy names, according to the Social Security Administration. In the Seventies, the name checked in as the 78th most popular name. In the 1980s, it had risen to number 35. And in the Nineties, it was fifth on the list. From 1999 to the year 2012, it was the most popular name for a baby boy born in the United States. At the height of its popularity in 2012, nearly 1% of all male babies born that year were named Jacob.

St. Jacob IL is about 25 miles east of St. Louis. And it is about 80 miles north of Jacob IL. The population of St. Jacob IL is about 1,300, and the population of Jacob IL is about 200. Jacob IL is about 3 miles northeast of the Mississippi River.

At the time US Route 66 was opened for general use (1926), Chicago, IL, and St Louis, MO, were the largest metropolitan areas which the highway connected.

Route 66 is over 2,400 miles long. In 1926 only 800 miles of them were paved.

Route 66 was established on November 11, 1926. It was officially removed from the US highway system in 1985. It was mostly replaced by interstate highways, including I-55, I-44, and I-40.

Bobby Troup composed the song “(Get Your Kicks On) Route 66” in 1946. It was first recorded by The Nat King Cole Trio, and later by Bing Crosby and the Andrew Sisters (1946). Subsequent versions have been recorded by Chuck Berry, The Rolling Stones, the Manhattan Transfer, and Depeche Mode.

NCAA men’s basketball coach Bobby Knight coached for Indiana University from 1971 to 2000. During this time his teams won the championship in 1976, 1981, and 1987.

The 1976 team featured Kent Benson, Scott May, Quinn Buckner, Bob Wilkerson, and Tom Abernathy. This team remains the last team to be undefeated National Champions.

The 1981 team featured Isiah Thomas, Ray Tolbert, and Randy Wittman.

The 1987 team featured Steve Alford, Dean Garrett, and Keith Smart.

Ooooookay then. And the pandemic began while his predecessor was in office.

In play:

George Henry Thomas, a Virginian who remained loyal to the United States at the outbreak of the Civil War, rose to the rank of major general. He never lost a battle in which he was in command.

Was gonna say pretty much the same thing. Biden didn’t take his place in the Oval Office until after they dragged #45, kicking and screaming, out of the place in January 2021 – and then he had to wait another two weeks until the fumigators completed their work.

In play –

Dave Thomas, the founder of Wendy’s Old-Fashioned Hamburgers, originally worked in the restaurant industry for KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken). He left them to become part of the investors group which founded Arthur Treacher’s Fish and Chips, before moving on a year later to open his first Wendy’s on East Broad Street, in downtown Columbus, Ohio.

(FWIW – I accidentally stumbled across the place in 1976, when I was in Columbus to take part in the Tour of the Scioto River bicycle tour)

We all know that Biden inherited the fiasco from Trump (much like Obama was left with the shredded economy after Bush left office). And the lockdowns and insurrection took place before Biden entered the Oval Office. I was reaching for something I could point to up til now as a way of including him on that list. To paraphrase Curly in City Slickers, “His day ain’t over yet.”

Fish and chips were likely introduced to England by way of Jewish immigrants (via The Netherlands by way of Spain and Portugal) in the mid-1800s. A Jewish immigrant, Joseph Malin, opened the first recorded combined fish-and-chip shop in Bow, East London, around 1860.

Fish and chips are traditionally served by British chip shops wrapped in newspaper.

The most popular fish dishes by far in Portugal are those made with bacalhau, or dried, salted cod. Portugal claims it as their national dish and also claims there are more than 50 recipes using it. It can be found in food markets stacked up like so much cardboard at the end of an aisle. Preparation usually requires first soaking the fish to remove the salt brine and soften it, then cooking it in a variety of ways, including bacalhau com natas (cod with cream). This involves boiling and shredding the fish, mixing it with fried potatoes, pouring cream and cheese over the top, then baking it. It’s an acquired taste.

Gadus fish as food is popular in several countries. It has a mild flavor and a dense, flaky, white flesh. The best known member of the genus is the Atlantic cod, or Gadus morhua, which is one of the most common ingredients in fish and chips. The name Cape Cod, coined in 1602 by Bartholomew Gosnold, is the ninth oldest English place-name in the US. In 1606 Samuel de Champlain visited Cape Cod, and in 1609 Henry Hudson visited.

Arthur Treacher was an English actor, whose signature roles were often butlers and valets. In the 1960s and 1970s, Treacher also became known for his role as the announcer/sidekick to Merv Griffin on Griffin’s television talk show, and for lending his name to “Arthur Treacher’s Fish & Chips,” an American fast-food restaurant chain.
