Trivia Dominoes II — Play Off the Last Bit of Trivia — continued! (Part 1)

On the Fridays live sketch comedy show, Andy Kaufman was in a sketch where two couples are eating out and the people take turns going into the bathroom to smoke marijuana. He claimed he was anti-drug and refused to continue the sketch. Michael Richards who was in the sketch grabbed the cue cards and threw them on the table in disdain. That started a fight with Kaufman and they cut to commercial.

Yes it was a pre-planned incident.

The Marijuana Party is a Canadian federal political party, whose agenda focuses on issues related to cannabis in Canada. Apart from this one issue, the party has no other official policies, meaning party candidates are free to express any views on all other political issues.

Abraham Lincoln began his career as a member of the Whig Party, like his Kentucky political hero, Henry Clay. However, by 1856, two years before his unsuccessful but profile-raising run against Sen. Stephen Douglas, Lincoln was a Republican, and remained one for the rest of his life.

The Republican Party was founded in 1854, at the Little White Schoolhouse in Ripon, Wisconsin. By the late 1850s, most former members of the Whig Party and the Free Soil Party had joined the Republicans.

As of 2020, only five political parties have seen their nominations elected President of the United States: Federalist, Democratic-Republican, Whig, Democratic, and Republican.

Salmon P. Chase, governor and U.S. senator from Ohio, Lincoln’s Secretary of the Treasury and, in 1864, his appointee as Chief Justice of the United States, was, at various points in his long political career, a member of the Whig, Liberty, Free Soil, Independent Democratic, Republican, Democratic and Liberal Republican parties or factions.

Chinook salmon, also known as king salmon, are the largest species of the fish. Individuals can grow to a length of 58 inches and a weight of 126 pounds. Chinook salmon is one of seven species of salmon found in the Pacific Ocean.

The Boeing CH-47 Chinook transport helicopter first flew in 1961 and is still operational. Over 1,200 have been built. Initially tested as a new design in 1957, the US Marine Corps adopted a variant which became the CH-46 Sea Knight which was used until being replaced by the MV-22 Osprey during the 2010s. USMC ANGLICO and recon units jumped and rappelled from CH-46s (and I did that when I was with 3D ANGLICO, long ago).

Chinook winds are generally westerly and warm winds.

“Four Strong Winds”, by Ian Tyson, was chosen by listeners on CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corp.) as the greatest Canadian song of all time, in 2005. Many artists have covered it, including Bob Dylan, who according to Tyson was one of the inspirations for the song, and Neil Young, whose version is probably the best known.

In some versions of Gilgamesh, the ancient Mesopotamian mythological hero, the Four Winds are guides to the hero and his friend Enkidu, helping them navigate the cedar forest on the orders of Utu, the ancient Mesopotamian sun god.

Capt. Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise retells the ancient legend of Gilgamesh and Enkidu in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “Darmok,” as he seeks to find grounds for a common cultural understanding with an alien starship captain.

The first episode of the original series of Star Trek aired on September 8, 1966. Entitled ‘The Man Trap’, the villain was a shape-shifting creature on planet M-113, which survived by extracting the salt from the bodies of its victims.

However there was a pilot with the crew we are familiar with, “Where No Man Has Gone Before”. In it, Kirk’s middle initial is R. as seen on a tombstone. It later became T. and canonically his middle name became Tiberius in ST:TAS episode “Bem”.

The name of the alien “Bem” in that episode (written by David Gerrold, who had also written the beloved “The Trouble with Tribbles,” among others) was a sf in-joke - aliens in Fifties movies were often dismissed as mere “bug-eyed monsters.”

Gene Roddenberry, STAR TREK creator, said, “The human race is a remarkable creature, one with great potential, and I hope that Star Trek has helped to show us what we can be if we believe in ourselves and our abilities.”

The starship on the original series was the USS Enterprise, NCC-1701. It was used in Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Animated Series, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek: The Search for Spock, Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Short Treks, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Galaxy Quest has, on some lists, been named one of the better Star Trek movies. In it the NSEA Protector has a hull number of NTE-3120. The inside joke is NTE stands for Not The Enterprise.

If you look very carefully the next time you watch Galaxy Quest, you’ll see Tech Sergeant Chen (Tony Shaloub) yawn as he steps out of the shuttlecraft onto the surface of the desert planet. He’s the first person ever to set foot on an alien planet, and he’s apparently just a little bored!

In the Marine Corps, the rank of Master Technical Sergeant was requested by the Commandant, John Archer Lejeune, in 1925. Technical Sergeant also became a Marine Corps rank. In 1935, additional ranks of Gunnery Sergeant and Platoon Sergeant came into being. From 1947 until 1958, Technical Sergeants were reclassified as E-6 and became the sole rank in this grade. Technical Sergeant was a rank that existed until 1958. The rank of Gunnery Sergeant replaced it and elevated to E-7 after the reorganization of grades in 1959. In today’s Marine Corps, E-6 is a Staff Sergeant and E-7 is a Gunnery Sergeant.

Sargent Shriver was a politician and diplomat, and a member of the Kennedy family by marriage (his wife was Eunice Kennedy). Shriver was one of the founders of the Peace Corps, and was its first director; while serving in the Johnson administration, Shriver also founded several economic and educational programs, including Head Start, VISTA, and Job Corps.

During the 1972 presidential campaign, when Thomas Eagleton (the Democrats’ vice-presidential candidate) resigned from the ticket, Shriver was named to replace him, as George McGovern’s running mate. McGovern and Shriver lost to Richard Nixon in a landslide.
