Benjamin Disraeli was the first person to be caricatured by the British magazine, Vanity Fair, in 1869.
In 1869, the new Dominion of Canada tried to take possession of the Red River colony. The inhabitants of the colony were having none of it and kept the federal Lieutenant Governor from entering from Minnesota. He and his entourage crossed the border at night in December, and by the light of a lantern, on the snowy prairie, he read out his commission in an attempt to take legal possession of Rupert’s Land.
Uhura and Sulu both held the rank of Starfleet lieutenant throughout the entire original run of Star Trek (1966-69).
Lieutenant Uhura was in command of the USS Enterprise at least once according to canon in The Lorelei Signal.
Gene Roddenberry, creator and original executive producer of Star Trek, said late in life that he did not consider the animated series, in which “The Lorelei Signal” appeared, to be canon. But it is to me (especially if it gives the underutilized Lt. Uhura more to do)!
Actress Zoe Saldana has appeared in a number of popular science-fiction, superhero, and fantasy films, including the Marvel Cinematic Universe (as Gamora), the Avatar films (as Neytiri), the Star Trek reboot films (as Uhura), and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (as Anamaria).
Zoe Saldana said that Steven Spielberg taught her the Vulcan salute while working on the set of The Terminal (2004).
Zoe Saldana played an immigrations officer and a Trekker (a fan of Star Trek) in The Terminal. The fictional Eastern European country from which Tom Hanks’s character came in the movie was Krakozhia.
Mehran Karimi Nasseri was the real-life inspiration behind The Terminal. The Iranian refugee resided at the departure lounge of Terminal 1 of Paris’s Charles de Gaulle Airport for a shocking span of 18 years.
King Charles III is named after King Haakon VII of Norway, who was Queen Elizabeth’s favourite uncle. Haakon was known within the family as “Carl” or “Charles”.
Haakon, Crown Prince of Norway has a controversial marriage. His wife was a single mother before they married and is suspected of drug use in her past.
Canada has the longest coastline in the world, at 202,080 km (125,567 miles). That’s almost twice as long as the second-longest coastline: Norway, at 103,000 (64,000 miles).
The official full name of Canada is simply… Canada. That’s it. Charles III is the King of Canada and head of state; Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is head of government.
Cajuns in Louisiana emigrated from France to Canada originally. They name “cajun” derives from the area in Canada they are from then called Acadie, modern day Nova Scotia, giving them the name Acadians.
Aside.
The rarely used full name of Canada is the “Dominion of Canada”. I can’t remember the last time I heard anyone actually use this, which would seem pretentious in many contexts. Perhaps when the coin and stamp people put out commemorative special editions? There was also a mediocre grocery store called Dominion’s.
Acadia National Park is located on Mount Desert Island on the Atlantic Coast of Maine. The park is close to the city of Bar Harbor and is about 100 miles from the Canadian border. Known for its stunning beauty, the park is home to Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the United States’ East Coast.
A visit there is highly recommended!
I don’t think so, not anymore. See the last two paragraphs here under Etymology here, and the official one-word name over the flag and coat of arms at the top right of the page: Canada - Wikipedia
In play:
Although the United States declared its independence in 1776, Great Britain did not formally acknowledge it until the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1783, which legally concluded the American Revolution.
Aside
I consider the Canadian Encyclopedia authoritative. The last two sentences of your Wiki article discuss levels of government but not official names. But perhaps @Northern_Piper could weigh in on this trivial point.
According to tradition, in gratitude for the loyalty of Virginians to the crown during the English Civil War, Charles II gave it the title of “Old Dominion”. The Commonwealth of Virginia maintains “Old Dominion” as its state nickname. Virginia has a public university called “Old Dominion University”.
The University of Virginia has been losers in two of the biggest (maybe the two biggest) NCAA Men’s Basketball upsets of all time. On December 23, 1982, ranked #1 in the nation, the Virginia Cavaliers lost to an NAIA school Chaminade. Then in the 2018 Tournament, they became the first #1 seed to ever lose to a #16 seed being defeated by UMBC.
