William Daniel Leahy graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1897. He then embarked on a Naval career, culminating in being appointed Chief of Naval Operations in 1937. He served in that capacity for two years before being placed on the retired list. He then served as Governor of Puerto Rico and US Ambassador to France before being appointed Chief of Staff to the Commander in Chief in 1942, a new position created by FDR. This position is now known as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The man he succeeded as US Ambassador to France was William Christian Bullitt Jr.

The city of Annapolis, Maryland, home to the U.S. Naval Academy, had several different names during the colonial era, including “Town at Proctor’s,” “Town at the Severn,” and “Anne Arundel’s Towne.”

In 1694, the Royal Governor of the Maryland colony moved its captial to Anne Arundel’s Towne, and renamed the city Annapolis, after Princess Anne of Denmark and Norway, who would later become Queen Anne of Great Britain.

Though the city is no longer named after Anne Arundel (who was the wife of Lord Baltimore, founder of the Maryland colony), the county in which Annapolis is located is still named Anne Arundel County.

The U.S. Naval Academy is also for potential Marine Corps officers. Although the Marine Corps is considered it’s own armed force, it has been part of the Department of the Navy since 1834.

The governors of New Jersey and Maryland are usually considered two of the most powerful under their respective states’ constitutions and laws; the governor of Texas is considered one of the weakest.

ETA: The Maryland state capital is Annapolis, which is also home to the U.S. Naval Academy.

The site is regularly used for filming television programs, television advertisements, and feature films. Productions have included Patriot Games, where an attack on a fictional royal family member, Lord Holmes, was filmed. Other films include* Four Weddings and a Funeral*, The Madness of King George, The Avengers (1998) and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001).
Scenes were shot at the grounds for The King’s Speech, where the site doubled for Buckingham Palace. In April 2012 the site was used for the barricade scenes in the film adaption of Les Miserables.

Jack Ryan, the hero of many novels by Tom Clancy, was portrayed by Harrison Ford in the movie Patriot Games. Other actors who have played Jack Ryan include Alec Baldwin, Ben Affleck, Chris Pine, and John Krasinski.

Over the course of Tom Clancy’s many novels, Jack Ryan rises from a CIA analyst to White House national security advisor to Vice President and then President of the United States.

Throughout the history of American comics, Clancy has been the staple name for an inept police officer, arising from the caricature that New York policemen were Irish. Clancy Wiggum continues to carry the torch on “The Simpsons”

Actor Clancy Brown, who is known for his distinctive, deep voice, has played such roles as The Kurgan in Highlander, Byron Hadley in The Shawshank Redemption, Brother Justin Crowe in Carnivale, Mr. Krabs in SpongeBob SquarePants, and Lex Luthor in numerous DC Universe animated TV series and video games.

If you sue someone for an injury, can they force you to get a medical examination before the trial? No according to the SCOTUS ruling Union Pacific Railway Co. v. Botsford, 141 U.S. 250 (1891)

The first case decided by the US Supreme Court was West v. Barnes, in 1791. The case concerned mortgage payments that were made using paper currency rather than gold or silver. The court ultimately ruled against the petitioner (West) on procedural grounds.

In 1964, a pilot episode was filmed for a proposed television series about Alexander the Great. The series wasn’t picked up for production, but soon after, two of the stars of the pilot would go on to what became their signature acting roles: William Shatner, who played Alexander, was cast as Captain James T. Kirk on Star Trek, while Adam West, who played Cleander, was cast as Bruce Wayne on Batman.

William Shatner played Capt. James T. Kirk, commanding officer of the USS Enterprise, NCC-1701, who usually did not get along well with the alien race known as the Klingons. Lt. Worf (Michael Dorn) was a Klingon and served as chief of security aboard the later USS Enterprise, NCC-1701-D. His only son’s name was Alexander.

William Shatner was born in Montreal, Canada. Many people think of his first role as being in a Twilight Zone episode, “Nick of Time” in 1960, but in fact his first feature roll was as the youngest brother in “The Brothers Karamazov” in 1958. He had appeared in earlier works, but not as a featured actor.

It was probably a feature role, too.

The 1958 film version of “The Brothers Karamazov” starred Lee J. Cobb as Fyodor Karamazov, the family patriarch, and Yul Brynner as Dmitri, the eldest brother. William Shatner was featured as Alexey, the youngest brother, and Claire Bloom played Katya, Dmitri’s fiancee. All four of these actors had connections to Russia; Brynner was born in Vladivostock and had Swiss-German, Russian and Buryat (Mongol) ancestry, while the other 3 all had a Russian Jewish parent or grandparent.
