Trivia Dominoes II — Play Off the Last Bit of Trivia — continued! (Part 1)

Real Madrid is a very popular Spanish soccer club. Per Wiki, “The club has traditionally worn a white home kit since its inception. The honorific title real is Spanish for ‘royal’ and was bestowed [on] the club by King Alfonso XIII in 1920 together with the royal crown in the emblem.”

It’s believed that the « real » in « Montreal » is also a form of « royal », based on a now archaic French word for « royal », used in the 16th century. « Montreal » thus means « Royal Mountain ».

The Kansas City Royals baseball team take their nickname from the American Royal, a livestock show, rodeo, and barbecue competition held annually in the Kansas City area.

The Open Competition at the World Series of Barbecue during the American Royal is billed as the world’s largest barbecue competition, with over 500 teams competing each year. This year the event will be held at the Kansas Speedway during the first weekend of November.

The Big Kahuna burger and the Royale with Cheese are two fictional sandwiches that appear in the 1994 movie, Pulp Fiction. Due to popularity of the movie many independent entrepreneurs have created their own versions of both burgers with varying degrees of success.

Former surfing champion Duke Kahanamoku (1890-1968) was nicknamed The Big Kahuna and is considered the father of modern surfing. But in his youth he was a world class swimmer.

At the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, he won a gold medal in the 100-meter freestyle, and a silver medal with the U.S. men’s 4×200-meter freestyle relay.

At the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp, he won gold medals in both the 100 meters and in the relay.

At the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris, he won silver in the 100 meters. The gold went to Johnny Weissmuller, and the bronze went to Kahanamoku’s brother, Samuel.

A statue and poster of Duke Kahanamoku appear in the 2002 Disney movie Lilo & Stitch, set in Hawaii. Lilo, a little girl, is a fan of his.

Duke Nukem is a 1991 platform game developed and published by Apogee Software for MS-DOS. The 2D, multidirectional scrolling game follows the adventures of fictional character Duke Nukem across three episodes of ten levels each. After the game’s release, Apogee Software became aware that the Captain Planet and the Planeteers animated series featured a character with the same name (Duke Nukem) and therefore to avoid a lawsuit, the software house renamed the 2.0 version of its game Duke Nukum. It later turned out that Duke Nukem was not a registered name, so Apogee registered it and used the original Duke Nukem name in the sequels. Apogee also received a legal letter from Duke University alleging trademark violation. Apogee successfully fought back, and agreed to use the full Duke Nukem name in all their marketing materials.

Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment, or APOGEE, was an astronomical spectrographic survey using the Sloan 2.5 m optical telescope at the Apache Point Observatory in the Sacramento Mountains in Sunspot NM, in the south central part of the state. In 3 years of observations, APOGEE, as part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III, collected data for 146,000 stars in order to understand the evolution of galaxies.

I did not know there was an acronym of apogee. Ignorance successfully fought!

Apogee is the highest or farthest point of an orbit; perigee is the lowest or closest point.

Perigee Aerospace’s 2 stage Blue Whale 1 is a partially reusable small-lift orbital launch vehicle currently in development. When completed it will launch from a sea launch pad in Jeju space center in South Korea. Perigee Aerospace is located in Daejeon, South Korea.

The capital of South Korea is Seoul, which is also the country’s largest city. About 20% of the country’s population live in Seoul, which has a population of nearly 10 million. During the Korean War, Seoul changed hands four times between the warring armies in the period from June of 1950 until the spring of 1951.

Sol, soul, sole, and Seoul are homophones. These words are not new, and I knew that. Life can bring you peace, especially when you take it a piece at a time. You can start your day with some cereal, and that experience might be surreal. You can take to the sea, but only if you can see what I mean. You might think that I am grown, but by the time you finish reading this you might groan.

Gen. Douglas MacArthur was commander of U.S. and U.N. forces during the Korean War from its outbreak until he was relieved of his duties by President Harry S. Truman on April 10, 1951, for disobeying orders, undercutting White House policy by seeking a wider war against the People’s Republic of China, and privately communicating with the President’s political foes in Congress. The Secretaries of State and Defense, and the Joint Chiefs, agreed with Truman’s decision. Truman later said, “I fired MacArthur because of the damn insubordination of God’s right-hand man.”

ETA: Ninja’d! South Korea is across the sea from the United States.

Harry Truman never received a college degree. He is the last President of the United States to not have one.

Harry Truman is the most recent POTUS not to be given a second (middle) name at birth. He was given the letter S when he enlisted in the army.

Not so: Harry S. Truman - Wikipedia

Harry S. Truman, as President of the United States, is the only human being to ever authorize the use of nuclear weapons in wartime, which he did in August 1945, leading to the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Empire of Japan surrendered within weeks.

Ah, ignorance fought for a second time today! (And in the same thread, too.)

Continuing…

On August 14, 1945, Hirohito, Emperor of Japan, made the decision to surrender. A faction of the army opposed to the surrender attempted a coup d’état on the evening of 14 August, prior to the broadcast. They seized the Imperial Palace, but the physical recording of Hirohito’s speech was hidden and preserved overnight. The coup failed, and the speech was broadcast the next morning.
