Trivia Dominoes II — Play Off the Last Bit of Trivia — continued! (Part 1)

You can travel by rail across Canada. My ex-wife did it right after 9/11 because of the FAA ground stop and national airspace shut down which lasted until 9/13.

A typical train run goes from Toronto to Vancouver, with major stops in Winnipeg MB, Edmonton AB, and Jasper AB.

On CanadaRail.ca, a Prestige Class Cabin with a Murphy bed for two has a 50% larger cabinn than the standard sleeper cabins.

Following events of 9/11, airports and commercial flights began to reopen two days later on September 13, but with stricter security policies and checks. However, general aviation (GA) operations took longer to resume, especially those around DC. The closure of GA airports negatively impacted the industry, and GA airports around DC are still affected by it today, two decades after the attacks.

General aviation encompasses a wide range of aircraft, including small single-engine airplanes, large cargo jets, helicopters, gliders, and powered parachutes. Civil aviation activities include crop dusters, Medevac aircraft, police aviation, firefighting aircraft, sailplanes, air charters, and more.

In the troubled days soon after the Al Qaeda terrorist attacks on U.S. airlines on Sept. 11, 2001, the airport in Charleston, S.C. was patrolled by uniformed South Carolina National Guard troops carrying AR-15s semi-automatic rifles.

I know, because I flew there at the time.

Immediately after the 9/11 attacks, all flights in the United States were immediately grounded and ordered to land at the nearest airport that could accommodate them. As a result, several planes landed at the Garden City (KS) airport, which had a long runway but no method to unload the passengers from the larger planes. The passengers were eventually unloaded by using ladder trucks from the local fire department.

A large number of planes and passengers were routed to Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador. They were welcomed by the community. Their experience resulted in a popular musical, Come from Away, which I would recommend if it’s touring in your area.

The deadliest air crash ever to happen in Canada happened on 12 December 1985 when Arrow Air Flight 1285R crashed on takeoff from Gander with members of the 101st Airborne Division aboard. All 248 passengers and 8 crew members on board perished. It is the US Army’s single deadliest air crash in peacetime.

The root causes of the crash include cargo overloading, and ice contamination on the wings that reduced lift.

A memorial at the crash site overlooks Gander Lake at DD coordinates ▲ 48.9116, -54.5743, and another memorial was erected at Fort Campbell. There is also a Memorial Park in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, just north of Fort Campbell, at DD coordinates ▲ 36.8312, -87.4727.

The symbol for a medicine prescription is Rx. The comes from the Latin word “radix” meaning root as many early medicines came from plant roots.

Medicare Part D, also known as the Medicare prescription drug benefit, is an optional Medicare coverage program, administered through private insurers, to help Medicare recipients receive more affordable prices on prescription medications.

Part D was signed into law as part of the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003, and went into effect on January 1st, 2006.

Some standard abbreviations used in medical prescriptions include the following:

QAM = quaque AM, every morning
TID = ter in die, 3x daily
BID = bis in die, 2x daily
QPM = quaque PM, every evening
PRN = pro re nata, use as needed

Typical abbreviations for American Civil War generals, among those who study the war, include USG for Ulysses S. Grant, REL for Robert Edward Lee, WTS for William Tecumseh Sherman, JLC for Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain and GHT for George Henry Thomas.

Actor Henry Thomas began as a child actor, gaining fame at age 11 for portraying the lead character, Elliot, in E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial in 1982. As an adult, Thomas has continued his acting career, as well as becoming a musician and songwriter. In recent years, Thomas has frequently collaborated with filmmaker Mike Flanagan, appearing as an actor in a number of Flanagan’s horror movies and television series.

Baltimore Orioles left handed pitcher Mike Flanagan was a member of the Orioles’ World Series Championship team in 1983. He won the 1979 AL Cy Young Award with a record of 23–9 and an earned run average of 3.08.

There have been over 300 no-hitters throughout MLB history, and nearly all of them have been performed by a single pitcher. There have been 20 no hitters where the starter didn’t go the distance and the bullpen completed the feat. On July 13, 1991 Flanagan combined to throw a no-hitter against the Oakland Athletics with three other pitchers. Starter Bob Milacki went 6 no-hit innings, and then he was followed by Mike Flanagan who pitched the 7th, Mark Williamson in the 8th, and Gregg Olson in the 9th. Starter Bob Milacki has been cruising, but in the 6th a Willie Wilson line drive hit Milacki in the hand and then the leg, although the ball fortuitously bounced over toward first base to keep history intact. That ended Milacki‘s day, but Flanagan, Williamson and Olson towed the line to record the second four-pitcher no-no in MLB history.

Mike Flanagan (no relation) has directed a collection of supernatural horror series on Netflix: The Haunting of Hill House, based on the Shirley Jackson novel of the same name; The Haunting of Bly Manor, based on the novel “The Turn of the Screw” by Henry James; and The Fall of the House of Usher, based on the short story (and other works) by Edgar Allen Poe.

The surname Flanagan (also sometimes spelled Flanigan, among several alternate spellings) is of Irish origin, and its root is in the Irish word for “red” or “ruddy.” The 2001 Green Bay Packers football team had a player named Flanagan (Mike, a center), and a player named Flanigan (Jim, a defensive tackle).

The Kansas City Chiefs will attempt to do something this season that no other team has done: win 3 consecutive Super Bowls.

However, the Green Bay Packers won the 1965 NFL Championship, and then won the first two Super Bowls over the course of the next two seasons. Thus, the Packers have three consecutive championships, which the Chiefs will attempt to achieve this season.

(a little history first) The Super Bowl was originally known as the AFL-NFL Championship Game for the first two years of its existence. The term ‘Super Bowl’ itself is generally considered to have been coined sometime in 1966 by Lamar Hunt, who was the owner of the Kansas City Chiefs at that time, and it became the ‘official’ name for the championship game in time for the third event in 1969.

If you count the first two games (that were NOT called ‘Super Bowls’ until after the fact), there have been a total of six other teams besides the KC Chiefs, as alluded to by @Railer13 who have won back-to-back championships, and in theory had a chance to win three in a row.

In the 1970s and early 1980s, wealthy businessman Lamar Hunt (founder of the American Football League, and owner of the Kansas City Chiefs), along with his brothers Nelson and William, attempted to corner the world silver market.

By the end of 1979, the Hunt brothers controlled approximately 1/3 of the world’s silver market, causing a run-up in the price of the metal, and generating several billion dollars in profits for the brothers. However, the silver market subsequently crashed on March 27th, 1980, leading to a market panic, and causing the Hunts to lose over a billion dollars.

When the Hunt Brothers tried to corner the silver market, the Federal Government forced the Chicago Board of Trade (think COMEX) to change the rules to stop them. They limited holders of futures to 3 million troy ounces and raised the margin requirement. As a result, the Hunt Brothers missed a margin call on March 27, 1980 and on that day - Silver Tuesday - the price of silver plummeted from over $50 to just above $10.

Lamar and Nelson were among the 15 children of oil tycoon Haroldsen Lafayette (H.L.) Hunt, Jr. At the time of his death in 1974, he was one of three billionaires in the world. (John D. Rockefeller, Jr and Howard Hughes were the other two.)

The Marquis de Lafayette was one of the few European noblemen who came to the aid of the Patriot cause during the American Revolution who did not insist upon a high-ranking post in the Continental Army. Instead, he offered to serve in the ranks without pay, won Gen. George Washington’s support and friendship, and ended the war as a major general.
