Trivia Dominoes II — Play Off the Last Bit of Trivia — continued! (Part 1)

The character of Dr. Daniel Schreber (Kiefer Sutherland), a scientist in the 1998 Alex Proyas sf thriller Dark City, was inspired by an actual person of that name, a mentally-ill German judge (1842-1911) who suffered from recurring schizophrenia.

Australian film director Alex Proyas is currently filming a musical adaptation of Karel Čapek’s 1920 play R.U.R. (“Rossum’s Universal Robots”), which had introduced the term “robot” for a task-performing machine.

Antonio Prohías was a Cuban-American cartoonist and the creator of the satirical comic strip Spy vs. Spy, which he illustrated for Mad magazine from 1961 to 1987.

The bee hummingbird is the world’s smallest bird and is native to Cuba.

“The bee ascends before my rolling eye” was the opening line of a cipher poem in the short story, “Hornblower and the Widow McCool”.

Theoretical research indicates that bee venom can help against Lyme Disease. It became less theoretical after Ellie Lobel had her symptoms go away after being stung by killer bees. The problem is that apparently for the cure to work, you need to be injected with the venom directly from the bee.

The sting of the Africanized honey bee is no more potent than any other variety of honey bee, and although they are similar in appearance to European honey bees, they tend to be slightly smaller and darker in color. Although Africanized honey bees do not actively search for humans to attack, they are more dangerous because they are more easily provoked, quicker to attack in greater numbers, and then pursue the perceived threat farther, for as much as a quarter of a mile (400 meters).

The first documented death from the Africanized honey bee in the US was in 1993 when an 82 year old rancher in Texas’s Rio Grande Valley tried killing a swarm. Since then, 5 people have been killed, 2 in Texas and 3 in Arizona.

Here in California, Africanized honey bee invaded the state in 1994, and in November 1995 the first multiple sting incident occurred down south in Blythe. There have been at least 17 more multiple sting incidents in the state. 3 dogs died from stinging.

The last recorded attack occurred in July 1998.

The character Anne Shirley was introduced in Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery. Gilbert Blythe proposes to her twice in Anne of the Island. She accepts the second time.

The exchange from the 1980 spoof comedy movie Airplane!, “Surely you can’t be serious?” “I am serious, and don’t call me Shirley.” is ranked #79 in the American Film Institute’s list of the 100 best movie quotes from the past 100 years.

Airplane! was written by the trio of writers known as ZAZ, who were brothers David and Jerry Zucker, along with the recently-deceased Jim Abrahams. The trio’s first movie was Kentucky Fried Movie, released in 1977. They went on to collaborate on several more ventures before going their separate ways in the 1990s.

Stephen Stucker, who played the irrepressible air traffic controller Johnny (“I can make a hat, or a brooch, or a pterodactyl…”) in Airplane!, was born in Iowa and raised by a conservative family in Shaker Heights, Ohio. According to ZAZ, he was gay but had not come out to his family by the time the movie was released in 1980.

Airplane! was responsible for reviving the careers of three of Hollywood’s former leading men: Lloyd Bridges, Robert Stack, and Leslie Nielsen. Of those three, Nielsen would enjoy the most success in the Police Squad franchise. Nielsen had made a career taking on serious roles, but will be best remembered for his comedy in his later years.

A queue is a data structure in programming that uses FIFO, first in first out to process data. A stack reverses this and is a data structure in programming that uses LIFO, last in first out to process data.

The name of Lt. Cmdr. Data (Brent Spiner) was, according to the first edition of the production bible for the sf TV series Star Trek: The Next Generation, supposed to be pronounced “DATT ah.” From his earliest appearance onscreen, however, it was pronounced by the cast as “DAY duh.”

In addition to playing the android Data in various Star Trek television series and movies, actor Brent Spiner also portrayed a number of related characters:

  • Lore: Data’s evil “brother”
  • Dr. Noonien Soong: the cyberneticist who created Data
  • B-4: an earlier prototype android created by Dr. Soong
  • Arik Soong and Adam Soong: two of Noonien’s ancestors
  • Allan Soong: Noonien’s son

I think you mean this guy: Altan Soong | Memory Alpha | Fandom

I do; I made a typo. “Altan,” not “Allan.”

In all the history of STAR TREK, only one person has ever played himself.

Stephen Hawking.

When Prof. Stephen Hawking was shown Main Engineering and the warp core of the USS Enterprise on the set of Star Trek: The Next Generation, he joked, “I’m working on that.”
