Trivia Dominoes II — Play Off the Last Bit of Trivia — continued! (Part 1)

Pope Benedict V attempted to take over as pope from Pope Leo VIII after the death of Leo’s previous rival John XII. So who were the popes and who were the antipopes in this mess? According to the Vatican all three were with overlapping pontificates.

One of the first assignments of the young Count Vincenzo Gioacchino Pecci when he was ordained a priest was as administrator of the Papal province of Benevento, near Naples. From 1837 to 1841, he ended the domination of the Mafia and Camorra in the area, restored public order, strengthened the local economy, reformed the tax system and stimulated trade with the neighboring provinces. Many years later, as Pope Leo XIII, in his famous 1891 encyclical Rerum novarum, he outlined the rights of workers to a fair wage, safe working conditions, and the formation of trade unions.

Leo XIII was also the first pope to be filmed: Pope Leo XIII,Luigi Pecci (1896) - YouTube

When a man is named Pope, he adopts a papal name, similar to the regnal names used by some monarchs.

The most commonly-chosen papal name has been John, which has been used by 21 popes. Other names which have been frequently chosen are Benedict (17 times), Gregory (16), Clement (14), Innocent (13), Leo (13), and Pius (12).

Pope John XXIII was the Pope before Paul VI, who was the Pope before John Paul I. By recent yers, we’ve had these guys as Popes:

2013 - now: Francis I
2005 - 2013: Benedict XVI
1978 - 2005: John Paul II
1978 - 1978: John Paul I (for 33 days; he died at night of a heart attack)
1963 - 1978: Paul VI
1958 - 1963: John XXIII

Thus, 1978 was ‘a year of three Popes’. It was the first such year since 1605 when we had Clement VIII, Leo XI, and Paul V. A year of three Popes has happened 13 times in all, in the years 827, 896, 897 (back to back!), 928, 964 (928 and 964 are also Porsche models), 1003, 1045, 1187, 1503, 1555, 1590, 1605, and 1978. There is actually a Wikipedia page for Year of three popes.

In one instance, in 1276, there was a year of four popes: Gregory X, Innocent V, Adrian V (“Yo, Adrian!“ :)), and John XXI.

The surname Popa is the most common family name in Romania, where it means “pope”.

It is said, in Italy. that every Italian can trace his ancestry back to at least one pope.

The Transfăgărășan Highway, Highway DN7C, crosses the southern section of the Carpathian Mountains in southern central Romania. It has more tunnels (5) and viaducts than any other road in Romania. Host Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear proclaimed that the Transfăgărășan was “the best road in the world,” a title the show had previously given to the Stelvio Pass in Italy. The road has also been dubbed “Ceaușescu’s Folly”.

The Stelvio Pass Road, which is the second-highest paved road in the Alps, is about 29 miles long and is over 9,000 feet above sea level. The road contains 48 numbered hairpin turns.

The United States had 48 states when Harry S Truman became President upon the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt on April 12, 1945. The day after taking the oath of office, Truman spoke to reporters of the White House press corps, saying, “Boys, if you ever pray, pray for me now. I don’t know if you fellas ever had a load of hay fall on you, but when they told me what happened yesterday, I felt like the moon, the stars and all the planets had fallen on me.”

When they were both starting out, Debby Harry and Penn Jillette lived together.

Playboy Bunnies are waitresses at Playboy Clubs; they are known for their signature outfit, which includes a corset-style teddy, rabbit ears, and a rabbit tail.

Several well-known women worked as Playboy Bunnies early in their careers, including actresses Lauren Hutton, Barbara Bosson, and Susan Sullivan, and singers Debbie Harry and Dale Bozzio. Journalist Gloria Steinem briefly worked as a Bunny, as part of an undercover assignment.

Marvin P. Middlemark invented the Rabbit Ears television antenna (dipole antenna) in 1953 in Rego Park, Queens, New York. Middlemark revolutionized television in the United States, as his Rabbit Ears increased the television signal reception available to the mass market; this move is considered by many as the single most important reason for the television boom of the late 1950s – 1960s.

Rabbits become sexually mature at three to eight months of age. Female rabbits gestate for an average of just 31 days, and become fertile again one day after giving birth.

The Spanish imperial eagle is native to the Iberian peninsula. It feeds mainly on European rabbits, which typically comprises about 58% of its diet.

There are more than 60 species of eagles worldwide, and eagles can be found on every continent except Antarctica. But only two eagle species live in North America: the bald eagle, which is the national bird of the United States, and the golden eagle, which is the national bird of Mexico.

Eagle Snacks was a line of salty snacks, such as pretzels and chips, which was originally launched by the brewing company Anheuser-Busch in 1979, with the goal of competing against Frito-Lay in the snack-food category. The brand’s name was based on the eagle which is featured in Anheuser-Busch’s logo.

Despite an extensive marketing campaign (including ads that featured Tony Randall and Jack Klugman), Eagle Snacks never met Anheuser-Busch’s expectations for it; the brewer finally gave up on Eagle Snacks, and sold the brand to Procter & Gamble in 1996 (though P&G apparently never actually marketed anything under the brand name). The brand name has changed hands several times since, and has been unsuccessfully relaunched at least once.

Most of the 60 species of eagles are from Europe, Asia, and Africa. In Central and South America there are 9 species, and in Australia there are 3.

The largest eagle in the world is Steller’s Sea Eagle. It weighs 11-20 lbs and has a wing-span of from 7 ft to 8 ft. It breeds mainly in Russia.
