Trivia Dominoes II — Play Off the Last Bit of Trivia — continued! (Part 1)

Queen Victoria did not succeed to the throne of the Kingdom of Hanover as had previous British monarchs because, under Salic law, she could not do so while any male heir lived. Her uncle Ernest Augustus was eligible, ready and willing; he took the Hanoverian throne and ruled from 1837 to 1851, the next-to-last monarch of that German realm.

Victoria is the only city name that occurs in all three North American countries. The capital of the Canadian province of British Columbia was named for Queen Victoria. The capital of the Mexican state of Tamaulipas was named for Guadalupe Victoria, the first president of Mexico. So was Victoria Texas, which was in Mexico when it was founded and named.

Queen Victoria, like Charles Darwin, married her first cousin.

Charles Darwin and his wife Emma Wedgwood had ten children. Two died in infancy and another died at age ten due to tuberculosis. The other seven went on to live long and fruitful lives; three of his sons were eventually knighted for their scientific achievements.

British actor Paul Bettany and his wife, American actress Jennifer Connelly, played Charles Darwin and his wife Emma in the 2009 drama Creation.

Jennifer Connelly will play a US Navy admiral’s daughter Penny Benjamin in the upcoming Top Gun: Maverick. In the original Top Gun, Penny Benjamin was mentioned in the film but there was no appearance.

Husband and wife Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connolley have each portrayed two different roles in Marvel films. In each case, one of their two roles was a voice-only artificial intelligence, created by Tony Stark:

  • Paul played J.A.R.V.I.S., Stark’s AI assistant, in several Iron Man and Avengers films, and then portrayed Vision, an android based on the J.A.R.V.I.S. AI, in several films.
  • Jennifer played Betty Ross in Ang Lee’s 2003 Hulk, and then provided the voice of Karen (a.k.a. “Suit Lady”), the AI in Peter Parker’s high-tech Spidey-Suit, in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Documentation exists that proves that Betsy Ross made flags for the Pennsylvania navy in 1777, and that she made United States flags for over 50 years after the American Revolution. But there is no proof that she sewed the first Stars and Stripes. In fact, the first mention that she had done so was a research paper by her grandson, written in 1870. Most historians dispute the story.

Red Stripe beer was originally an American brand, but after a few unsuccessful years, the Illinois brewer sold the brand to a Jamaican brewer in the 1930s. There, it became one of the world’s signature beers fondly remembered by returning travelers, finally exported back to the US in the 80s.

Virtually every single beer can be broken into one of two main types, ale or lager.

The determining factor between ales and lagers is yeast.

Ale yeasts prefer warmer temperatures (roughly 60-75 ℉) and are considered “top fermenting” because they ferment while sitting on top of the beer in a tank. These yeasts can release more fruity and spicy compounds, and this is especially true of Belgian-style yeasts. There are a wide variety of flavors that ale yeasts provide to beer—spanning mango to pineapple, banana, clove, vanilla, and more.

Lager yeasts prefer cooler temperatures (roughly 42-55 ℉) and are considered “bottom fermenting” and tend to create clean, crisp flavors that emphasize a beer’s grains and hops.

As for a beer’s color, a common misconception is that all lagers are light in color. But yeast also has no impact on the color of beer – both ales and lagers can be light or dark. The color of beer comes from the different levels of toasting or malting on the grains that are used to brew the beer.

The Belgian Shepherd is a breed of herding dog, officially standardized and defined by dog fanciers in Belgium in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is similar to other herding dog breeds from the region, such as German Shepherds and Dutch Shepherds.

In Belgium, there are four recognized varieties of the breed (but all four are classified as being of the same breed): Groenendael, Laekenois, Malinois, and Tervuren; differences between the varieties center on the color and texture of the coat. However, dog associations in some other countries classify these varieties as separate breeds; for example, the American Kennel Club recognizes only the Groenendael as a “Belgian Sheepdog,” while classifying the Malinois and Tervuren as separate breeds.

According the the American Kennel Club website, there are 195 breeds recognized by that organization. There were 9 breeds that were initially recognized by the AKC, four of which were Spaniels and three of which were Setters.

The Cheetah Conservation Fund provides Anatolian and Kangal Shepherd dogs to Namibian farmers to scare off cheetahs from preying upon their livestock, so that the farmers won’t shoot the endangered big cats, long regarded as pests.

Cheeta (sometimes billed as Cheetah) is a chimpanzee character that appeared in many Tarzan films of the 1930s–1960s, as well as the 1966–1968 television series, as the ape sidekick of the title character, Tarzan. No chimpanzees appear in the original Tarzan novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs that inspired the films.

About 20 different chimpanzees played Cheeta, from the early 1930s to the 2000s.

The average lifespan of a chimpanzee in the wild is relatively short, usually less than 15 years. Wild individuals may live over 25 years and on rare occasions, around 60 years. Captive chimps tend to live longer, with average lifespans of 31.7 years for males and 38.7 years for females. The oldest known captive chimp to have been documented lived to 63 years.

Dame Jane Goodall is one of the world’s most eminent primatologists, specializing in chimpanzees. She has studied the Kasakala chimpanzee community in Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania since 1960. Her pioneering studies of the chimpanzees have advanced human knowledge of the species, including discovering that chimpanzees use tools, and can be carnivorous.

Dame Judi Dench has, over the course of a long career, played, among other things, a poet (Iris), a housewife (84 Charing Cross Road), a spymaster (Skyfall), a traitor (Red Joan), a feline (Cats), a princess (Murder on the Orient Express) and a queen (Shakespeare in Love, Victoria & Abdul and Mrs. Brown).

Dame Agatha Christie (1890-1976) wrote sixty-six detective novels and fourteen short-story collections during her career. She also wrote the world’s longest-running play, The Mousetrap, which opened in London’s West End in 1952 and ran continuously until March 16, 2020, when the stage performances had to be discontinued due to the pandemic.

One of the first ever mousetrap patents was “Little Nipper” by James Henry Atkinson in 1894. The Little Nipper slams shut in 1/38,000th of a second - a record that has still never been beaten.

William Shatner played both Capt. James T. Kirk of the starship USS Enterprise on Star Trek: The Original Series, as well as his dead brother George in a single scene.
