Trivia Dominoes II — Play Off the Last Bit of Trivia — continued! (Part 1)

RTP, CITJ, and RTJ all stand for different words meaning the same thing — this point on the map, at lat / long -25.500000, 70.000000 >> https://is.gd/A0L0uA which is the Rodrigues Triple Point, or the Central Indian (Ocean) Triple Junction, or the Rodrigues Triple Junction. The RTP is the triple point in the Indian Ocean where three tectonic plates meet, the African Plate, the Indo-Australian Plate, and the Antarctic Plate. Rodrigues, of the Republic of Mauritius, is the island located near the RTP.

The RTP was born when the Seychelles microcontinent drifted off the Indian Plate at 64 Ma ago, where “Ma” is megaannum, or millions of years ago.

The Republic of Mauritius, east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean, won its independence from the United Kingdom in 1968 but did not become a republic until 1992. In the intervening years, it retained Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state.

The extinct Dodo bird was endemic to Mauritius, with the main island of Mauritius being the only known habitat of the flightless bird, which is still considered to be the national bird of Mauritius. The dodo is represented in the national Coat of Arms. It is said that the dodo evolved from pigeons who had lost their way.

The passenger pigeon was a species of bird, native to the eastern half of North America, which existed in massive numbers before the arrival of European settlers. The birds traveled and roosted in extremely large flocks, but the combination of overhunting and habitat loss led to a rapid decline in the species over the course of the latter half of the 19th century, and went extinct in the wild by 1901; the last passenger pigeon died in captivity at the Cincinnati Zoo in 1914.

The United Kingdom got a new monarch in 1901 (King Edward VII succeeded his mother, Queen Victoria, who died of old age), and the United States got a new President (Theodore Roosevelt succeeded William McKinley, who was assassinated).

William Jennings Bryant was an orator and politician from Nebraska who ran for president three times on the Democratic ticket. He was defeated in 1896 and 1900 by William McKinley; in 1908 he lost to William Taft. Bryant later served as Secretary of State under Woodrow Wilson from 1913 through 1915.

William Jennings Bryan (no “t” at the end) was also a pacifist who resigned from the Cabinet in part due to his disagreement with President Woodrow Wilson’s foreign policies even before the U.S. entry into World War I.

Bryan, California was a railroad town in the northern part of the state, in Humboldt County, between the existing towns of Larabee and Shively. Bryan used to be on the Northwestern Pacific Railroad line.

Bryan Cranston has, among many other roles, played a dentist (Seinfeld), a harried dad (Malcolm in the Middle), a meth dealer (Breaking Bad), a War Department officer (Saving Private Ryan) and a President of the United States (All the Way).

Yep, my bad!

In play: In Breaking Bad, Giancarlo Esposito played Gus Fring, the meth-dealing proprietor of the restaurant Los Pollos Hermanos. Esposito made his Broadway debut at age 8, playing a slave child opposite Shirley Jones in a musical called Maggie Flynn.

Brothers Phil and Tony Esposito, from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, were both star players in the National Hockey League: Phil was a center, while Tony was a goalie. Phil played for the Chicago Black Hawks, Boston Bruins, and New York Rangers, while Tony played for the Black Hawks (and, briefly, for the Montreal Canadiens).

Both brothers were elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame for their accomplishments, and both of them were named to the “100 Greatest NHL Players” list in 2017.

At least 22 pairs of brothers have played in the NHL, including:

  1. Jamie and Jordie Benn
  2. Jesper and Adam Boqvist
  3. Haydn and Cale Fleury
  4. Marcus and Nick Foligno
  5. Quinn and Jack Hughes
  6. Caleb and Seth Jones

Harlan F. Stone of New Hampshire was appointed an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court by President Calvin Coolidge, a Republican, but was appointed Chief Justice of the United States by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, a Democrat. He was the first Chief Justice not to have previously served in elected office.

((And that list doesn’t even include the six(!) Sutter brothers who played in the NHL; a game between the Islanders and Flyers featured four of the six brothers.))

In play:

Author Harlan Ellison, who wrote in a variety of genres, including science fiction, horror, and mysteries, was a brilliant writer (he won nine Hugos, four Nebulas, five Bram Stokers, and two Edgars), but was also known for his famously difficult and combative personality.

Ellison frequently filed lawsuits and grievances against publishers and other writers; he once sent 213 bricks to his publisher, postage due, and the dust jacket of one of his own books described him as “possibly the most contentious person on Earth.”

Harlan Ellison was, in addition to being contentious, noted for his very forward approach to women. An oft-told tale about him was that he once went up to a very tall, beautiful woman at a science fiction convention and asked, “What would you say to a little fuck?” The woman supposedly looked down at him and replied, “Hello, little fuck.”

Nippy Jones was involved in one the few instances in baseball in which an umpire was persuaded to change his call. Pinch-hitting in the tenth inning of game 4, Jonrs jumped out of the way of a low pitch that was called a ball. The combative Jones retrieved the ball and showed the ump shoe polish on the ball, evidence that he was entitled to first base. The Braves went on to score the winning run, then came from behind to wen the Series.

The Braves have played in three different cities; Boston, Milwaukee, and Atlanta. They have won the World Series exactly once in each city.

(I think that @jtur88 missed the last few plays when they wrote their response. Tying together @RickJay’s and @Elendil_s_Heir’s responses)

Dragon Con is an annual science fiction, fantasy, gaming, and fan culture convention, held in downtown Atlanta since its founding in 1987. The convention has grown dramatically in recent years, and attracted over 85,000 attendees in 2019. Dragon Con 2020, which would have been held from September 3-7 of this year, was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Confederate ironclad warship CSS Atlanta ran aground in June 1863 and was captured by the United States Navy during the Civil War. She was pressed into service as the USS Atlanta, and served to the end of the war. Sold through intermediaries to Haiti in 1869, she was lost at sea with all hands on her way south.

In 1804, the country of Haiti (then known as Saint-Domingue) declared its independence from France. When doing so, it became the first sovereign nation in the Western Hemisphere to unconditionally abolish slavery.
