Trivia Dominoes III — Play Off the Last Bit of Trivia

Here Come the Brides was a TV series that played for two seasons at the end of the 1960s. Its stars included Robert Brown, David Soul, and Bobby Sherman; and Bridget Hanley, Joan Blondell, and Susan Tolsky.

In the only dramatic English language non-martial arts role in Bruce Lee’s acting career, Lee appeared as a Chinese immigrant guest star in one episode in 1969.

Teen idol actor and singer Bobby Sherman appeared as a guest start on an episode of the TV drama Emergency! in 1974; inspired by that experience, Sherman trained to become a paramedic, and focused on training police officers in southern California on CPR and first aid. He became a reserve officer with the LAPD, a training officer for the Los Angeles Police Academy, and a reserve deputy sheriff for San Bernardino County.

The M4 Sherman tank was the medium tank most widely used by the US and Western Allies in World War II. Over 49,000 of them were manufactured during the war.

The M4 is an assault rifle manufactured by Colt Firearms. Colt trademarked the name “M4” and held an exclusive contract to produce the M4 family of weapons for the US government through 2011.

In April 2004, Colt filed a lawsuit against arms manufacturers Heckler & Koch and Bushmaster Firearms, claiming trademark infringement over production of the HK M4 and the Bushmaster M4, respectively. Heckler and Koch settled out of court, renaming it’s assault rifle “HK416.” But in December 2005, a judge ruled in favor of Bushmaster, and declared “M4” was now a generic name and that Colt’s trademark should be revoked.

The Colt .45 most famously refers to the Colt Single Action Army (SAA) revolver, a legendary weapon that is synonymous with the Old West. It also inspired the name of a baseball team, the Houston Colt .45s, which are now known as the Astros, as well as a brand of malt liquor, Colt 45, that is stereotypically a favorite in the Black community. Afroman has a rather famous song about it.

Malt liquor is the legal term, in the U.S. and Canada, for a beer which has a higher-than-typical alcohol content. This is achieved during fermentation, by adding additional fermentable “adjuncts,” such as corn or sugar, to the malted barley, to yield additional alcohol in the final product without changing the overall taste.

Malt is a key ingredient in bagels.

St Louis style bagels are known less for their recipe and more for the way they are sliced: vertically, like a loaf of bread.

St. Louis’ cuisine scene is known for being innovative and unique, or filled with culinary abominations, depending on whom you ask. The town’s BBQ is top-notch and is its own thing, just like Kansas City’s or Memphis’. Ooey gooey butter cake is a delight. Toasted ravioli has been compared unfavorably, and by a noob who should keep her mouth shut, to Totino’s Pizza Rolls. And the town’s pizza – paper-thin crust and provel cheese (an alloy of provolone and mozarella) - is … an acquired taste, to put it charitably. The beer, though. My god, the beer in St. Louis.

St. Louis used to have a museum dedicated to the history of the dog. The AKC Museum of the Dog operated in STLMO from 1987 until 2019, in Queeny Park, West St. Louis County, and then it returned to New York City. The AKC Museum of the Dog is now at 101 Park Ave, NY NY.

St. Louis was founded in 1764 by a group of French fur traders. They named the settlement after King Louis XIV of France, who ruled from 1226-1270. Louis XIV was the only king of France to be canonized by the Catholic Church; thus, he is also known as Saint Louis.

St. Louis became part of the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase, and was the fourth-largest city in the nation from 1870-1920. In 1904, the city hosted the Louisiana Purchase Exposition (also known as the World’s Fair), as well as the Summer Olympics.

St. Louis is a great sports town, and has been home to professional franchises of the MLB (St. Louis Cardinals), NFL (St. Louis Rams), NBA (St. Louis Hawks), and NHL (St. Louis Blues). The Cardinals were established in 1882 and have won 11 MLB Championships; the Rams relocated from Los Angeles in 1996, won an NFL Super Bowl (2000), then moved back to LA in 2016; the Hawks played from 1955 - 1968, and won an NBA Championship in 1958; the Blues were established in 1967 and have won one NHL Championship in 2019.

In the “modern era*,” St. Louis has been home to two NFL franchises, both of which moved to the city from elsewhere, and later moved away from the city.

The Cardinals relocated to St. Louis from Chicago for the 1960 season, and played for 28 years in the city, before moving to the Phoenix area for the 1988 season.

The Rams relocated to St. Louis from Los Angeles for the 1995 season, and played 21 seasons in the city, before returning to Los Angeles in 2016.

*- St. Louis also had two teams, the All-Stars and the Gunners, which played briefly in the NFL during the league’s early years.

For an extended period of time, St. Louis actually had two MLB franchises. One was, of course, the aforementioned Cardinals in the National League.

The other was the St. Louis Browns of the American League. The Browns originated as the Milwaukee Brewers (yes, really!) and were a charter member of the American League, which was formed in 1901. But after a dismal showing both on the field and in the stands, the franchise relocated to St. Louis in 1902 and became the Browns, where they remained until 1953. At that point, the team moved to Baltimore and became the Orioles.

The Browns were never very successful, but they did manage to win one AL pennant, in 1944. They were defeated in the World Series by…the Cardinals.

The St. Louis Cardinals have won 11 World Series Championships, and they’ve lost 8. The Cardinals won the World Series in 1926, 1931, 1934, 1942, 1944, 1946, 1964, 1967, 1982, 2006, and in 2011. They lost the World Series in 1928, 1930, 1943, 1968, 1985, 1987, 2004, and in 2013.

In 2016, the Chicago Cubs beat the Cleveland [At The Time Known By An Offensive Name] Team in the World Series. For the Cubs, it was the first time they’d been in the championship series since 1945, and they hadn’t won it since 1908. The Cleveland team had a similar, decades-long championship drought. The Series promised to be one for the ages, and it didn’t disappoint. It went the full seven games, and into the bottom of the 10th inning, before the Cubs somehow, miraculously, won the game and the series. Words aren’t sufficient to describe the jubilation. A few days later, on a rare (for Chicago) balmy early November day, an estimated 5-7 million people crowded Chicago, from Wrigley Field to Grant Park, for a victory celebration, in what would become one of the largest gatherings of humans in history.

And WGN’s audio was fucking terrible. I hope their sound engineer got fired.

Early baseball championships of the late 1800s and early 1900s were referred to as the World’s Championship Series or as The Championship of the United States.

Before the now-standard best-of-7 games format was adopted the World’s Championship Series sometimes had a few as 3 games (in 1884, Providence beat New York, 3 games to 0) and as many as 15 games (in 1887, Detroit beat St. Louis, 10 games to 5). Although some of the previous World Series were in a best-of-7 games format, it wasn’t until 1922 that all World Series Championships adopted this format permanently. In 1921 the New York Giants had defeated the New York Yankees 5 games to 3, but in 1922 the New York Giants defeated the New York Yankees 4 games to 0, with one tie, and from then on to today it has been a best-of-7 games format.

Eventually, the name of the World’s Championship Series became shortened to the World Series.

Five current Major League Baseball franchises have never won the World Series: the Milwaukee Brewers, San Diego Padres, Seattle Mariners, Colorado Rockies, and Tampa Bay Rays. Of those teams, the Mariners are the only current MLB team which has never even made it to the World Series.

The greater Milwaukee metropolitan area includes over 40 distinct breweries and over the years over 70 have made the city their home. Such popular beers as Millers, Pabst, and Schiltz have had breweries in Milwaukee. The city was so famed for it’s breweries that several beers were named after it- Old Milwaukee and Milwaukee’s Best to name the two most famed. The towns first brewery opened in 1840.

MIlwaukee was also home to the fictitious brewery Shotz, where Laverne and Shirley worked, though obviously the whole show was filmed on a SoCal studio lot and/or around Burbank. The interior scenes in the fictitious brewery where they worked were actually filmed at a Budweiser brewery in Van Nuys. If you look closely, you can see the Budweiser logo on some of the cases.
