Trivia Dominoes III — Play Off the Last Bit of Trivia

In Quentin Tarantino’s retelling of history (Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood), Sharon Tate never encountered Manson Family members who mistakenly entered the home of her next door neighbor. She is portrayed by Margot Robbie.

David White was an American actor. White had a long career as a character actor in film and television, but his signature role was as Larry Tate, the sycophantic, profit-obsessed president of the McMann & Tate advertising agency, and the boss of Darrin Stephens, in the television series Bewitched.

Elizabeth Montgomery (1933–1995) was the only actor to appear in all 254 episodes of Bewitched, which ran from 1964 to 1972.

President Richard M. Nixon’s ruthless but successful reelection campaign in 1972 is the backdrop for much of the Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman movie All the President’s Men, directed by Alan J. Pakula. William Goldman, an Oberlin College graduate (as am I), wrote the screenplay.

Richard M. Nixon’s 1972 reelection landslide victory resulted in 520 electoral votes, to 17 for South Dakota Senator George McGovern.

In the 1972 Democratic nomination race, George McGovern defeated several other challengers, including Senator Edmund Muskie, 1968 nominee Hubert Humphrey, governor George Wallace, and representative Shirley Chisholm.

George Wallace, governor of Alabama, had run for President in the 1968 election, with the American Independent Party. Wallace carried five states and 46 electoral votes.

George Wallace was a four-term governor of the state of Alabama. He was well-known as being a staunch segregationist, particularly during the 1960s civil rights movement, though he later repudiated his earlier stances on segregation and race, and publicly apologized for his words and actions.

Wallace also ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. presidency four times; his 1972 campaign for the Democratic nomination was cut short by an assassination attempt, which left him paralyzed from the waist down.

Wallace Simpson, though she eventually wound up married into a European royal house, her beginnings were far humbler. Her extended family had Old Money, and lots of it, but her immediate family had basically none because reasons. Nevertheless, a generous uncle supported her and her mother, to a point. At school, she was ostracized for being poor by the standards of the other girls. What she lacked in wealth she compensated for in wit and determination. Through her marriages, she maneuvered her way through high society until she wound up rubbing elbows with the House of Windsor (or maybe Saxe-Cobourg of Gotha at the time).

nitpick: Wallis Simpson

Can’t believe I missed that. D’oh!

According to show creator Matt Groening, The Simpsons home town of Springfield was chosen because of its homogeneity; nearly every state in the union has a “Springfield.” Groening used the city of Portland, Oregon, as a template for many locations (and character names) in the show, as it was where he spent much of his youth.

Definitely the House of Windsor. King George V changed the name in 1917; Wallace didn’t meet the Prince of Wales (the future Edward VIII) until 1931.

In play:

Springfield, Mass. and Harpers Ferry, Va. (later West Virginia) were the two primary U.S. military arsenals and rifle factories at the beginning of the Civil War.

Danny Ferry is a former basketball player. Ferry was a celebrated and highly-recruited high school player, and went on to play basketball at Duke University, where he helped Duke to reach the Final Four three times, and was named the College Basketball Player of the Year in 1989.

Ferry had a 14-season professional career (thirteen of those in the NBA), but failed to achieve the same sort of stardom he had in college; after retiring as a player, Ferry moved into front-office work, serving in various executive roles for several NBA teams.

Television personality Art Linkletter wrote that his granddaughter said she’d seen a fairy that morning.

“Oh, what did the fairy look like?” he asked.

“It looked like a boat.”

That’s when he realized she meant “ferry”.

In 1960 The Game of Life was updated to reflect modern changes. For example, once a player reached the “Day of Reckoning” space, they had to choose one of two options. The first was to continue along the road to “Millionaire Acres,” if the player believed they had enough money to out-score all opponents. The second option was to try to become a “Millionaire Tycoon” by betting everything on one number and spinning the wheel. The player immediately won the game if the chosen number came up, or went to the “Poor Farm” and was eliminated if it did not. If no player became a Millionaire Tycoon, the one with the highest final total won the game. In addition, there were spaces that forced a player to go back; in the case a player landed on one of these, they were forced to take the shortest route and pay no attention to any penalties and rewards in doing so.

This version had Art Linkletter as the spokesman, included his likeness on the $100,000 bills (with his name displayed on the bills as “Arthur Linkletter Esq.”) and a rousing endorsement from Linkletter on the cover of the box.

Art Linkletter was Canadian! I did not know that. Art Linkletter was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, the 4th largest city in the province. He was born there in 1912, and 30 years later became a naturalized US citizen. But he was very young, only 5, when his family moved to San Diego and that’s where he was raised. Essentially, San Diego is his hometown. He graduated high school and college in San Diego.

Interestingly, one of his earliest jobs in the broadcasting profession was working for a San Diego radio station named KGB. Not the Russian KGB. He was an announcer there and later became station manager.

In 1974 KGB introduced the KGB-FM 101 Chicken, an advertising mascot played by Ted Giannoulas. Ted, a student at San Diego University, wore a chicken outfit for a promotion to distribute KGB Easter eggs at the San Diego Wild Animal Park. The Chicken was a hit, appearing at concerts and sporting events, notable at San Diego Padres games. After a falling out with the station, Giannoulas was replaced by another unnamed employee of the station. Giannoulas sued KGB, and a court found his favor; Giannoulas was allowed to continue performing in a chicken costume, but not the same as the original costume. Since then, Giannoulas and his alternate ego, The Chicken, have represented the city of San Diego and 101 KGB-FM.

Baldwin Wallace College in Berea, Ohio changed its name to Baldwin Wallace University in 2012. Its current president is Lee Fisher, former Ohio lieutenant governor and attorney general. The winning margin from his successful 1990 bid for AG is easy to remember; 1,234 votes.

The “Baldwin Brothers” are four brothers, all of whom have had successful careers in acting. From oldest to youngest, they are Alec, Daniel, William, and Stephen.

Another actor, Adam Baldwin (best known for his roles in Firefly and Chuck), is often mistakenly believed to be a member of the Baldwin Brothers, but in fact, he is not related to the other Baldwins.

Actor William Baldwin was born in 1963 and has acted in Flatliners (1990) and Backdraft (1991). His wife is singer Chynna Phillips. Chynna Phillips’s parents are Michelle Phillips and John Phillips – members of The Mamas and the Papas.

John Phillips was born in Parris Island, South Carolina, which is the location of Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island (MCRD PI).

There are two Marine Corps Recruit Depots (or, Marine Corps Boot Camps): east coast and west coast, which are Parris Island SC and San Diego CA.

Generally, if you live east of the Mississippi River you’ll go to boot camp at Parris Island SC and if you’re west of the Mississippi you’ll be a ‘Hollywood Marine’ and will go to boot camp at MCRD San Diego CA.

I was living in San Francisco when I enlisted, and I went to boot camp in San Diego. I shipped out on 25 January 1980 and was in boot camp when the Miracle on Ice occurred. We did not watch the game, which was on a Friday night. But that weekend, on the Sunday morning, our Senior Drill Instructor, Gunnery Sergeant Leland K. Deuel (➜ https://www.facebook.com/lee.deuel.9 ■ ), arrived at our squad bay and as he entered he loudly announced to us,

“WE BEAT THE RUSSIANS!!!”

(Now there’s a meandering post…)
