The Lion King and Star Trek Generations.
The Mets lost the World Series in 2000 as well.
And I was at Game 5 so I guess I memory blocked it like those hats that had a split Mets/Yankees logo on them. Dunno what “the curse” will be called, perhaps after next year’s 40th anniversary of the arrogant ruthless team that nearly lost in Houston and Boston will be called. If not for the 69 Miracle’s it’d be 55 or even 64.
I’ll be back here with another try before they’re 3-3 in the WS.
Didn’t McGann regenerate into John Hurt aka The War Doctor.
Skimming quickly through the thread, I was kind of surprised this one never got posted:
Which famous musician was found dead in Harry Nilsson’s London apartment?
“Mama” Cass Elliott, and Keith Moon.
The one that annoys me is “what is the world’s tallest mountain” because the answer is mt Everest. Period. It is not Mauna Kea. Now whatever mtn in south America is furthest from the center of the earth.
Canonically yes, however it was a pretty big (but good) retcon. When Eccleston made his debut, that regeneration hadn’t been conceived yet. It’s 183 days between Hurt’s first appearance onscreen in the role and his last.
Okay, only New York Sports things I could think of:
Q: What Yankee manager was fired after winning the pennant (but losing the World Series) in his last year managing the team?
A: Casey Stengel (1960) & Yogi Berra (1964)
Q: What Yankee and Mets Manager was born in Missouri and died in New Jersey?
A: Casey Stengel & Yogi Berra
(music)
Q: Who wrote “Yesterday”? (different songs)
A: Paul McCartney (1985) and Badfinger (1970)
(good possibility there are other different ones)
A bonus answer! I was thinking The Lion King and The Hudsucker Proxy.
Yikes! I’ll walk back where Stengel “The Ol’ professor” died - it was California.
And there are like 20 songs just called “Yesterday” and lots more with the word in the title.
Stengel once said, “Can’t anyone here play this game?” regarding the 120 loss 1962 Mets. Hopefully the answer to “The losingest team in baseball” won’t always just be those hapless Mets. I’ll back away from this thread and go visit Harry Nillson’s apartment.
That record was literally broken four months ago.
That’s just one season. The Phillies have lost the most games in MLB history. Far and away ahead of the Braves in losing baseball games. Every time the Phillies lose a game they set a new record.
Golly. Nobody in South Chicago knows how to play the game, Casey.
Two more games to do it. One more win and one more loss to raise their “winning” percentage to .253 vs Mets .250. Must have been rainouts for the Mets (40-120) as before then it was 154 games per season, then 162 and rainouts only require playing if the pennant is on the line.
That’s true. Indeed it means the Phillies are the losingest sports team in the history of organized sports. (The Washington Generals are trying to lose so they don’t count.)
The winningest team of all time? Nope, not the Yankees. It’s the Giants. They have won 11541 regular season games and exactly 100 playoff games.
They had a decent season so we call them the Commanders now.
That’s pretty pathetic considering how long they’ve been around.
Slightly off-topic:
What MLB pitcher won the most games over his career? Cy Young (511).
What MLB pitcher lost the most games over his career? Cy Young (315).
It is the sixth most of any franchise, fourth among NL original franchises:
Yankees, 252
Dodgers, 140
Cardinals, 134
Red Sox, 108
Braves, 102
Giants, 100
No one else is close to 100. The A’s have 85, despite having won the World Series nine times. Next is the most of any expansion team, the Astros with 83, despite having won the Series only twice.
The fewest of an original franchise is 30, by… the White Sox. That is by way of comparison fewer than the Blue Jays, who have only been around since 1977.
It’s surprisingly hard to get these numbers.
The numbers line up pretty well with the most World Series games played by teams. Yankees, Dodgers, Giants, and Cards are 1,2,3, and 4 on the list. Red Sox and Braves come in at 6 and 9.
What actress played two roles - identical cousins - in a 1960s TV sitcom? Two very different personalities, but their appearance differed only in their hair.
In the eponymous Patty Duke Show, Patty played both Patty and Cathy Lane.
Elizabeth Montgomery played Samantha Stevens and cousin Serena (last name unknown) in Bewitched.
