Buda and Pest.
Tolkien?
Hm, I hadn’t thought of Twain, but if you count him as a twentieth century writer then there are three answers. But both Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn were published before 1900, so I don’t think it’s a good fit. I was thinking of
James Joyce (Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Ulysses) and J.R.R. Tolkien (The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings)
What about Thomas Harris? Manhunter then 7 years later The Silence of the Lambs?
Is Silence of the Lambs really regarded as “one of the greatest works of English literature” ?
Good question. Many consider it one of the best thrillers of all time. Also Manhunter was the movie. Should be Red Dragon.
Heck, the obvious answer to me was Harper Lee with To Kill a Mockingbird and Go Set a Watchman.
I thought about Harper Lee, but she didn’t seem to fit the stipulation that the writer have “published a novel which received widespread popularity” prior to spending years writing the book that “is now regarded as their magnum opus and one of the greatest works of English literature.”
Ah, I glossed over that. I focussed on “received widespread popularity” and “years writing next book”.

Black Sunday is highly regarded in certain circles. Many terrorists, when caught or killed, are found to have a copy of it in their possession. He went into the “how to” a little more accurately than law enforcement would have preferred.

Is Silence of the Lambs really regarded as “one of the greatest works of English literature”?
Well, not by me (I think the movie sure deserved its accolades), but most authors aren’t fairly evaluated during their lifetime. When my father was in school in the 1930s, Twain and Dickens weren’t considered serious literature. When I was in school in the 70s and 80s, neither was Tolkein. Jim Thompson was considered maybe half a step above Mickey Spillane, while Jerzy Kozinski was a lock for literary stardom, but my impression is that these days Thompson is considered the bigger deal.
Yes, a much inferious first draft, which the poor senile author was coerced into publishing as a sequel.
In which movie does one character, whose nickname contains an honorific and a type of animal, attempt to impress another character by passing off someone else’s big fancy house as her own?
This Pope, the only one from his county as of today, took the name Adrian.
In which work did Tim Curry play the manager of the Plaza Hotel?
Home Alone 2 and Eloise: The Animated Series
I was curious enough to look this up. I was aware of the only English pope having taken the name Adrian (he was Adrian IV) but I had never heard of the only Dutch pope, who was Adrian VI.
That is correct. And bonus is that Adrian VI is the last pope to use his own name as his papal name.
