Two professors at the Department of Chemistry at the University of Utah claimed to have made a quantum leap in technology, achieving something that physicists had been trying to do for years by using a radically different approach. Instead of going through the usual announcement at a conference or with a paper in a prestigious journal, they went straight to the press and blindsided everyone. Physicists were skeptical at first, but this was a breakthrough that everyone wanted, so they tried to replicate the results…with no success. It was ultimately decided that the apparent success was really an unexpected glitch, and interest in the topic slowly faded, although the potential results were so great that a lot of people still pursued the effect, hoping for that big breakthrough that never came.

They eventually determined that the spot on the film were due to electrostatic pickup, not x-rays penetrating the foil.
