Gen. Henry H. “Hap” Arnold is the only U.S. serviceman ever to hold five-star rank in two different services. He was also the first man to fly a mile above the ground, in 1911. He became commander of the U.S. Army Air Corps, later the Army Air Forces) in the fall of 1938 and continued to command them during he entirety of World War II, being promoted to General of the Army (five-star rank) in December 1944. After the Air Force was made a separate service in 1947, he was made General of the Air Force in May 1949, being the only person ever to hold that rank. He died eight months later.
