Trivial questions: Windows 10 "shut down" colors

I’m posting here because I am convinced that this must have a factual answer. This has nagged at me ever since I got this (my first and only) Windows 10 computer.

When I shut down my Windows 10 computer, there is always a second or so (or less) where it shows a full screen of a solid color before it turns off. There is a range of colors, mostly reds plus a few greens.

How is this controlled? Do all Windows 10 computers do this, and do it the same way, or are there (for example) manufacturer differences? Would it be possible to alter the range of available colors for that closing screen?

Since none of the three computers I have used with W10 behaved this way, I am guessing manufacturer differences".

I believe the colour used for this is the same as the selected ‘accent colour’, which can be changed in the personalization dialog.

This is not the same thing. For one thing, there is not one color, there is a rotation of a number of colors, maybe 20 or more. Also, I turned the color off in that dialog, and there was still the closing color screen. This full color screen is what shows during the second or so the screen also says “shutting down.”

Thanks, I’ll check with HP (the brand of my home computer) to see what I can find out.

Do you have the accent colour set to ‘automatic’? If so, it will change it to try to match your wallpaper (and if you have rotating wallpaper, that will result in rotating accent colours).

I mean, it’s possible that the PC manufacturer has added in something to interfere with the normal operation of this on your machine, but on a standard Windows 10 (and 11) machine, accent colour equals background colour for the ‘shutting down’ screen and other system screens such as the one you see when you hit Ctrl+Alt+Del

No, I don’t have accent color set to “automatic.” I do have rotating wallpaper, something Windows provided, seven different flowers or plants, enlarged and with fuzzy backgrounds. I can cycle through them, or they change by themselves on some arcane schedule, but they don’t seem to have any effect on the shutting down color.

On the “colors settings” page it shows samples of 48 “accent” colors that seem to be available (plus the option of a custom color). Some but not all of these might be used in the shutting down screen, possibly. Beneath this array of available colors there are choices of two places to use accent colors, neither of which is the shutting down screen, and neither of which do I have marked. I don’t think “accent colors” are what I’m seeing, although I appreciate the suggestions.

I have to contradict my previous post, in part at least. On the accent colors page, there is a row of 5 colors called “recent colors,” with the one on the left checked. I checked a different one, and that color (a blue, which I never got before) became my shutting down color; it also moved to the leftmost position on the row. I don’t know why it was called a recent color, since it has never appeared before.

I’m going to experiment with different actions on that row of “recent colors,” which is tedious because I have to shut down to test the results, but I’ll see what I can figure out.
