Trompe L'Oeil Painting of Window overlooking Provence

Ok hopefully this doesn’t break any rules. I saw this on ebay (I’m not the artist) and wanted to get some opinions.

What do we think of this Trompe L’Oeil painting of a window overlooking a lavender field in provence? Note that it is a Giclee print and not an original.

I was a fine and decorative art appraiser for 14 years, until recently when the economy tanked.

The artist is a one-trick pony with serviceable trump l’oeil works. His website directs people to sales on eBay only, but he reportedly also sells through 3 galleries in Paris and one in Naples, Florida (a community noted for selling mainly to retirees). Most of his works are offered for sale for approximately US$1200 to US$4000, and this one has a Buy It Now price of $1913.

So, do you like this work of art $2,000 worth? If so, fine. However, his biographical information indicates no formal art schooling, and the only award he seems to have been given was very vaguely stated. Meaning: the likelihood that the resale of this work is going to be very low.

Weatherburn Gallery in Naples has not, at a quick glance, much of a reputation either good or bad, which means nothing either way.

It’s just a question of how much you like it. He has other views on his site at www.bernardscholl.com that you might like just as well, and if you contact Weatherburn Gallery you might be able to haggle over the price.

Good luck.

I agree with the poster above. If you like it for price buy it. It’s not going to be an investment, but most art isn’t.

Personally, I’m not a fan of giclée. I think it’s a fancy copy masquerading as a print or a painted work, but that’s just me perhaps.

For the record, a giclee (with or without the accent) is a digital print made on an inkjet printer of (usually) very high quality.

In other words, an expensive photograph.

I own two giclees, and I paid a fair amount for them. But I stand by my statement. It’s an expensive copy, but it’s portrayed in the art world as though it’s just a minor step below an actual painting, which IMHO it’s not.

Honestly? I don’t like the colors. They look a bit garish to me. The whole painting, including the arch framing, is a bit gaudy and cheesy to me. Not my cup of tea as far as artwork goes. I wouldn’t pay $2000 for the original, much less a giclee print of it.

But if someone else likes it and the artist can get that price, good for him or her. There are limeted edition giclee print photographs I’d be happy to pay that kind of price for, but not for a giclee of a painting. I don’t think I’d pay more than $50-$100 for a good giclee of a painting. Obviously, this also includes the arched window framing, which is probably at least a hundred or two dollars.

For $2k, I want a curtain on BOTH windows…
