Starring Five Time Academy Award Winner, Kirk Lazarus, and MTV Movie Awards Best Kiss Winner, Tobey Maguire.
Giggle.
Yeah I didn’t hate it! It had some funny moments and coming from as big of an anti-fan of Ben Stiller as I am, that is saying quite a bit. I thought hard about seeing it yesterday and decided that I couldn’t sit through Ben for almost two hours.
Today I was so bored I decided to go anyway.
I’m not sorry I did.
On top of everything else, it has a great soundtrack!
Hands down the funniest movie I’ve seen this year. Downey nails it.
Well, we knew something was going to knock The Dark Knight out of 1st place eventually. I’m glad to hear it was Tropic Thunder that did it. I hope word-of-mouth continues to grow.
Jodie Foster in “Nell”. Maybe not strictly retarded but still garned a nomination IIRC. I took the whoe “retarded” thing as a statement about Hollywood and not the developmentally disabled. RD Jnr. was so right in that scene.
I love the parody of other films. “Close Encounters” and “Raders of the Lost Ark” in the same scene. “Deer Hunter” “Platoon” also.
“DON’T JUDGE MEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!”
Trivia - Robert Downey Jr. & Tobey Maguire played gay lovers (as a side plot) in Wonder Boys.
I love this movie.
Just saw it, and it’s as good as everyone here is saying. I kept laughing hard enough to set off coughing fits.
It has been a long time since I “guffawed” at a movie. I guffawed.
My husband and I saw this again yesterday. We had wanted to see it again but hadn’t planned on seeing it so soon. We saw Transsiberian (interesting), and were going to see Vicky Christina Barcelona, but then we got a free pass to Hamlet 2 (funny w/ heart) later in the evening, and Tropic Thunder was the only one that would work out for us time-wise in order to make the free screening. I was glad to see it again. It did hold up, was still as funny, we could understand lines and jokes that passed us by the first time because we were laughing so much, and it’s interesting that because I knew the main characters a little bit better, I felt even more affinity for most of them (all but the Jack Black character, though he does have one of the funniest lines when he’s tied to the tree and is trying to entice Alpa Chino to come over and untie him). So for me, the movie wasn’t just a fluke where the funny bits were only funny because they were so shocking/off-the-wall. They were just as funny the 2nd time, and the funny bits in the trailer were even more funny in context. Speaking of the trailer, I forgot to say after the first time I saw it, I love that not all the funniest bits were in the trailer. They left a lot to be discovered unexpectedly. It’s nice to be surprised.
Saw it for the second time yesterday, my friend’s kids wanted to see it and I knew that they would love it. The lady selling tickets was elderly and treated me with great disapproval taking two young girls to see an R rated movie- that was the first laugh of the evening, the girls loved the “scandal”.
I agree with Equipoise, it holds up on second viewing. I even appreciate Tom Cruise more now. I made the first mention in this Thread of his role, but spoilered it because I was so blown away by the surprise aspect. Since his participation has now been “unspoilered”, I can say that the surprise isn’t necessary to enjoy his performance. First time around I was just so surprised that it was Tom Cruise, this time, knowing it was Tom Cruise, I was able to better appreciate that his casting was far from being just a gimmick- he really is great in this movie.
The girls loved his character but had no idea they were watching Tom Cruise, they were very surprised after the movie when I asked them, “Didn’t you love Tom Cruise in this movie?”
This movie makes you appreciate how good an actor Tom Cruise is. It’s kinda sad because his off-screen antics have really overshadowed that fact.
And he plays such a CRAZY BASTARD in this.
I did not plan to see the movie and I sure didn’t expect to like it, but the interview on The Daily Show sold me. Specifically the line already quoted: “You may have single-handedly made Tom Cruise likable again.”
I decided I was going to have to see what could make THAT happen, and now I want to give Mister Crazy a big happy noogie. And as for the homages – I haven’t groaned that loudly since I realized the not-really-a-twist in Kill Bill 2:
When the main character realizes that her opponent is the one who killed her old master and now intends to kill her – with her own sword! It was all I could do not to scream at the screen “I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU ACTUALLY DID THAT”. I just groaned and laughed and covered my face.
RD Jr’s eyes: Creepily blue at the end.
Oh, and: “Lance…”
I
WILL
FUCK
YOU
UP!!!
I loved the look on Matthew McConaughey’s face.
“A nutless monkey could do your job. Seriously, a nutless monkey”
This movie is SO going to be discovered and become somewhat of a classic on DVD.
I saw the movie tonight with my brother and we both loved it- it was a lot of fun, enjoyable on several levels, and Tom Cruise almost stole the show as the foul-mouthed producer. Robert Downey Junior was absolutely brilliant and I honestly believe he deserves an Oscar for his performance. He even sounded like an Australian when he was acting as an Australian IMHO, which takes a lot of skill.
The only thing that nagged at me was that not once did the characters comment on the fact that their guns were loaded with blanks (except for one reference to Robert Downey Junior’s character cleaning “a gun with no bullets”).
Once they realised they were involved in an actual conflict, I would have thought that they’d be ditching the blank-firing guns in favour of the actual guns the bad guys had…
Otherwise, a very good film, and lot of fun, and one I’ll definitely be getting on DVD when it comes out.
What Diogenes said.
My sister (an actor) and I (who have done a little acting) went to see it on Saturday night. There was a definite grossosity factor in the first, I don’t know, third of the movie, perhaps, and there was one scene where I had my hands over my eyes and was peeping through the cracks while my sister had her head buried in my shoulder. But it was still funny! We laughed so hard we got hiccups, and kept quoting lines to each other all the way home. It’s just wrong. And soooooo funny.
I loved hearing that it was #1 at the Box Office for the 2nd week in a row. I know those numbers don’t matter, since plenty of great movies barely or never make the Top 10, while trash often gets the top spots, but it is nice hearing when worthy movies make it up there. If nothing else it’s showing that people aren’t paying attention to the misguided protests (which indeed, might have been good for some publicity).
He was also hilarious (and thoroughly convincing as an Aussie) in Natural Born Killers (easily the best performance in the film).
I saw some behind the scenes thing on Comedy Central where Ben Stiller was saying that Kirk Lazarus had originally been written as Irish, but that Downey asked if they could change it to an Australian because “I can improv better in Australian.”
I figured that probably meant he was more comfortable with the accent since it was something he’d done before.
