It would hurt in a primary, but it’s unlikely he’ll face one. In the general, the independent / wavering / sane segment of the electorate is less likely to think he’s a counterproductive nutbag and therefore go for the Democrat.
Ah. After reading the OP I figured you were referring to a primary challenge scenario since that’s kinda what CJJ was talking about.
Seems to me he’ll be much better off out in the real world…after all he could only save $4 million a year on his $164,000 salary. Surely as a full-time lobbiest he’ll be able to make some real money.

Over the weekend the McConnell campaign send out an e-mail which, IMO flogs the usual gun paranoia as a pre-emptive strike against any primary candidates who would try to run from the senator’s right:
