Trouble with an older game called Nox

I got it from GOG and started it up. The introductory cinematic seemed to work all right, but then the main title screen began flickering and the mouse was unresponsive. The game is set to work with Windows 98 and I have 10-could that be an issue?

I’m not familiar with the game but I did a quick search and saw other people on the GOG forums were having the same issue. Might want to check there for a solution. Example: how to play NOX on windows 10?, page 1 - Forum - GOG.com

Thank you for the suggestion. I did try Googling it and got similar results-the problem there is that they don’t explain how they applied the fixes. For example:

n the Windows Settings for both NOX.EXE and Game.exe:

  • Compatiability Mode: Windows98/Windows Me
  • Settings: Reduced Color Mode > 16 bit

In-Game Options:

  • Set it to 1024x768 and it will apply when you start playing the game itself (not the meuns).
  • 16 bit color
  • Uncheck “Unlocked DX Surfaces”

This is Greek to me. I was hoping a Doper had encountered this issue and had a simpler fix. If not…ah well, I’m out $2.99.

Did you try running it as admin? Usually you just right click on the exe and choose that.

It’s a decent game. Worth a play if you can get it working.

Go into the folder for the game. There should be a NOX.exe and Game.exe file. Right click on one and go down to the last option which is Properties. Then pick Compatibility and you should see something like this:

(I just picked a random .exe for illustration since I don’t own that game). Click the box for “Run this program in compatibility mode for:” and select Win98. Then the bottom part for Settings, tick the box for reduced color mode and pick 16 Bit. Do the same stuff for the other .exe file.

Assuming those suggestions from the forum are correct, that should let you start. The other things it says are in-game options you would commonly pick from the game’s menu screen.

(And check the “Run this program as admin” box there too)

I will try the other things. I can’t get to the menu screen currently.

Ok, it seems to be working much better now. The sound is still a little wonky and the cursor flickers, but that’s ok. Thanks! I was about to give up!
