Flying is expensive already. Heck, I can’t afford to fly a helicopter – let alone a kerosene-burner! I think Congress was wrong to penalise aircraft operators to raise the tax on jet fuel. ‘Hey, truckers are evading taxes!’ ‘Good lord, you’re right! Let’s tax pilots!’
That’s screwed up. Truckers also try to buy “farm diesel”, which is sold to operate tractors and such and so isn’t taxed like “road diesel”. Looks like this would be a lot easier to come by. Also, in a recent thread about a guy wanting to take a trip on a private jet for just the cost of fuel, Jet-A was already a lot more expensive than the diesel prices I see posted on the highway.
I can’t see what the advantage to running Jet-A would be.
But if they raise the taxes so that AVTUR is the same price as diesel, then won’t the truckers stop buying it? So what then is the point of sending the extra tax to the highway fund?
Furthermore - why is the tax on diesel so high that it becomes economically feasible for truckers to use aviation fuel in the first place?
