I am a lurker here but decided to finally register. I am wondering if anyone in this part of cyberspace shares a liking, ok an obsession, for true crime genre television. I can’t survive without my CourtTV and shows like Forensic Files, and my absolute favorite : Dominick Dunne’s Power Privilege and Justice.
For example Dominick Dunne’s Power Privilege and Justice is a show that chronicles weekly, crimes that have been deemed “controversial”. This week is going to be about a Doctor who reported his wife missing in the 80s, and ended up being the murderer himself! Am I getting too excited about this kind of thing? lol
Anyone else get this excited for Crime genre (fiction is ok too)?
Yup, I also love real stories. I love Dunne’s presentation of real examples of the “rich folks get off easy” belief shared by so many - it’s not just sour grapes talking! And the deadpan delivery he gives the “I was there, and I know” comments. Fiction just can’t make that!
I watch A&E’s Cold Case Files and American Justice pretty much daily. The shows freak my husband out and he thinks I’m a sick person for watching them. Heh. He says it’s no wonder I have nightmares, but what can I say? I’m not fascinated by the crimes, I’m fascinated by the way they solve the crimes.
Thats funny, I’ve been called “disturbed” for my interest in this but like you I have found that I am drawn to the crimesolving more than anything… and also it may be a harsh reality, but the key word here is reality. We should know the world that we live in.
Fiction truly can’t make these moments the same, there is such a sense of truth and fact that it makes the show much more intriguing. Some fictional crime plotlines just scream “seen THAT one before” and are very very predictable. These crimes are the real deal, and sometimes scarily so!
We like to see the cunning villains outsmarted and the evil tracked down and made to take responsibility for their wrongdoings! What’s so sick about that?
I like ‘cold case files’, FBI files, and ‘Forensic detectives’ - as these are all on every night, I watch at least one of them - they’re great to send you to sleep.
Cold Case Files, Forensic Files, American Justice, Your The Detective-- all on my must see list.
There’s one that I cannot stand. The Profiler, I think it’s called. That long-nailed, big-haired, red-lipped woman irks me.
Also, I saw about two episodes of a show with an Asian “blood spatter” expert that I really liked and then never saw it again. Does anybody know: the name, the station, if it still comes on?
I am fascinated by true crime. I watch all of these, but have never heard of You’re the Detective. Must be a regional thing. I have read many books on the lives of serial killers: The Zodiac Killer, Gary Ridgway, John Wayne Gacy, Jeffrey Dahmer, Richard Ramirez - they all fascinate me. I’m most interested in the “why.” I still don’t understand what makes a person a serial killer. Nature? Nurture? No one seems to know, which makes it even more interesting.
Another Courttv junkie checking in. I love Forensic Files, Masterminds and Biggirl’s hated Dayle Hinman though her show has disappeared lately. I haven’t watched Dominic Dunne, somethng about his delivery just yells SMUG! I also watch Catherine Crier Live daily, come to think of it may TV stays glued to Courttv from 5-8 or 9. I also like Nancy Grace’s interview style, but she also seems to have disappeared lately.
I think it’s very cool that I watch Cold Case Files, The FBI, Forensic Files at night to fall asleep in LA, and in Ireland Zombiesatemybrain is doing the same thing. Small, small world. And we watch these programs because we are interested in justice, it seems to me.
I Like watching them but am dismay at the number of shows that end like this: the perpetrator is finally discovered after several years to be a known criminal in the neighborhood. In other words, the cops screwed up but the don’t tell you this.
[Creepy, mysterious voice]That’s because I am, Biggirl! BWAHAHAHAHAAAAAA![/Creepy, mysterious voice]
Nah, actually I just watch *a lot * of TV.
I’ve been fascinated by crime (both true and fictional) ever since I was a kid. Mom took Helter Skelter away from me after my third time through it because it/I was creeping her out. My birthday was yesterday, and Huz got me three DVDs - Silence of the Lambs, American Beauty and West Side Story. A little death, anyone? He actually saw two books on serial killers in the store, but didn’t want to buy them without my perusal/approval. Like I said, I love me my CorpseTV!!!
