True Detective - HBO - McConaughey / Harrelson [SPOILERS]

Me too.

Yep. That’s it. I was thinking of Pan’s Labyrinth, but yeah, it looks like that guy’s bigfoot film. It was downright creepy.

So if nothing else, the fact that he was wearing a gas mask and undies means that at least they’ll nab him for cooking meth.

Yep. Expect a cameo from Cranston.

Maybe the jerky commercial is wedged in there somewhere, too. What is it: “Messing with Sasquatch”?

The image of the guy in the mask and undies showed up right after Rust says that like most dreams there’s a monster at the end of it, cut to bigfoot imagery.

I like the interplay between the two detectives.

Harrelson’s scene in the bar was great, you can feel him trying to get away to go and talk to his girlfriend. The scene involving Rust and his mowing of Cohles lawn…interesting!! I wonder what role the two interviewing detectives, in the present day, will have in the show…(other than as storytelling device?)

I haven’t seen any predictions or spoilers to the show, so this is my own set of expectations. Sometime after solving the basic crime to the satisfaction of their own jurisdiction these two guys got in some form of trouble that is being investigated by the two carrying on the interviews. I’m suspecting that Woody’s violence and family situation may have boiled over and he did (or is suspected of doing) something bad enough to be investigated. The flashbacks are not painting Woody in a favorable light. But Matthew’s character is going to wind up being the really violent one.

One or the other of them (maybe both) got into some heinous shit while they were working together. I hope I’m wrong, but that’s what I’m feeling at this stage.

The basic premise is that the interviewing detectives are having the two from the original case fill them in completely so the new case can be properly investigated, and because everyone thought the murderer had been caught (or killed is what the foreshadowing indicates) but now there is a new case that appears related.

They have already stated and shown that the new murder matches the old ones investigated by the pair being interviewed. The interviewers have implied that they think Rust could be in involved with their questions about whether Rust was trying to prevent the original case from going to the task force, about Rust trying to direct the investigation where he wanted it to go, and other questions showing their suspicion.

They also already stated that Rust and Martin haven’t spoken to each other in years because of a falling out, so it doesn’t make much sense that both are being investigated for anything unrelated to the original case.

Yeah, I assume that Rust is their suspect, but I expect to be surprised.

I got the impression from the questioning that Martin is their suspect. They haven’t shown Martin the pic of the new death.

It’s safe to say so far that they’re not telegraphing anything obvious, which I like. I would hate it if they too clearly made one of them the prime suspect. TV writing in general is such that we would all immediately think it could not be the obvious choice.

I am thinking it won’t end up being either of them, but maybe it has to be since we haven’t been introduced to anyone else that would make sense as a suspect for the new crime. It would be extremely surprising and maybe even a letdown if the new crime was committed by some character the audience barely knows and in whom we have no emotional investment.

It’s obvious to me, based on your comments in response to my “prediction,” that I need to rewatch the episodes thus far. I either dozed off when some of those details were presented or else I didn’t factor them in to my thinking.

The main thing for me is that the mystery/ies is/are secondary to my main enjoyment of the show. The pace, the settings, the dialog, and all the bells and whistles are holding my interest at least as much as the storyline.

The fact that the door is open for anybody to be more or less than what they seem means that whatever new wrinkles may come, I won’t be all that surprised – I don’t think.

And since (as I understand it) these 8 episodes (is it?) will be a completed story and next season will have a new cast and story, there’s no way to predict who will be left standing by the last episode of the season.

Could be, and I don’t think Rust is the killer, but there were a couple of times when they asked Martin about Rust going off the grid, etc. that made me think that Rust was their suspect, but then I thought maybe they were letting Martin think they suspected Rust to make Martin feel at ease and start talking.

But then they left the file on the table when they left the room and the camera was still rolling to see if Rust opened the file, which he did right in front of them. God, I love this show.

If Rust wasn’t a suspect, wouldn’t he have been able to leave and go buy his own beer ? Or he would have had a chance to have few beers before coming in, if it was of his own free will. Regardless, he had balls having them go get it for him.

I loved the lawn mower scene. He was showing Martin that he could spend time with his wife and he might not know about it. I also wonder if Rust was supposed to be Martin’s alibi for wherever he came home from.

Marty’s daughters would be young adults in 2012. I’m wondering if they are going to become characters, or prey.

The funniest thing about the lawnmower scene is that, fairly common Aussie slang is to "cut another man’s grass’ meaning to make moves on a friend’s partner. I wonder if the fact that the cinematographer Adam Arkapaw is an Aussie and Matthew McConaughey lived here for a year is just coincidence.

Perfect !

Interesting twist if so!

It’s even funnier in light of this.

I wasn’t able to watch episode 3 last weekend, so I caught up just now. I still fucking love the show! It reminds me of Twin Peaks and X-Files when they were each in top form…so I think that means that in the end I’ll be unhappy, but for now I’m really enjoying it.

I’m rewatching with my wife and just realized that the musician in the bar scene is Jo-El Sonnier. Very cool.
