Truisms in Pop Songs

Thanks Chef. You took the words right out of my mouth.

Here’s some more:

The Smiths: “Some girls are bigger than others,
Some girls’ mothers are bigger than other
girls’ mothers.”
Depeche Mode: “Death is everywhere,
there are flies on the windscreen
for a start, reminding us
we could be torn apart tonight.”
The Sundays: “I feel fine, don’t wake me up yet,
The young and the old, they get everything,
And its my turn.”

More to come…

One of the greatest truisms ever is in a Talking Heads song:
“Water dissolving, and water removing.
There is water at the BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN!”

And then there’s a recent one by Pink Floyd:
“So I opened my arms to my enemies,
and I asked can we wipe the slate clean?
But the told me to please go fuck myself
Sometimes you just can’t win…”

And of course, the greatest truism ever:
“Life ain’t easy for a boy named Sue…”

It’s “Name”. Of all their stuff, it’s my favourite.

Ooh thanks, I love this song but I could never remember who the artist was. It is one of the most beautifully bitchy songs ever. Especially love the line

I’d have so many friends, that if I ever hurt one, I wouldn’t have to make ammends.

Only time will tell if we stand the test of time (Van Halen)

The Smiths - “Pretty girls make graves.”

Pearl Jam - “Corduroy” - “I’ll end up alone like I began.”

The Smiths - “In my life, why do I smile at people who I’d much rather kick in the eye?”

The Smiths - “Work is a 4 Letter Word”

U2 - “The Fly” has several truisms:

  • “A man will beg and man will crawl,
on the sheer face of love, like a fly on a wall.”

  • “Its no secret that a liar won’t believe anyone else.”

  • “Its no secret that a conscience can sometimes be a pest,
Its no secret that ambition bites the nails of success.”

No problem Mermaid, I love bitchy songs. I have a lot of them. Songs that give power to individuality are my favorite.

sorry for the hijack…on with truth the rest of you.

“Once you know you can never go back” Otherside by RHCP

I’m a bitch
I’m a lover
I’m a child
I’m a mother
I’m a sinner
I’m a saint…
What can I say? I am.

Angkins That’s Bitch by Meredith Brooks

“So many words for the broken heart / It’s hard to see in a crimson love / So hard to breathe / Walk with me, and maybe…”

Yes. I know. But I think this is one of the more profound songs of the Backstreet Boys…then again, I can interpret ‘sardines on rye bread’. It’s all about context.

“Life is a rock, but the radio rolled me.”

I will have to vote for another Magnetic Fields song, “The Book of Love”

  • The book of love is long and boring
no one can even lift the damn thing
it’s full of charts and figures…
but I love it when you read to me…*
That’s all I can remember, but it’s all true.

Rush (the group, not the pompous radio personality) has many. Some of my favorites:

From Limelight
All the world’s indeed a stage,
And we are merely players,
Performers and portrayers,
Each another’s audience
Outside the gilded cage.

From Tom Sawyer
He knows changes aren’t permanent,
But change is.

From Subdivisions
Some will sell their dreams for small desires
Or lose the race to rats
Get caught in ticking traps
And start to dream of somewhere
To relax their restless flight

From The Sphere: A Kind of Dream
We can walk our road together
If our goals are all the same.
We can run alone and free
If we pursue a different aim.
From I Think I’m Going Bald
I looked in the mirror today;
my eyes just didn’t seem so bright.
I’ve lost a few more hairs.
I think I’m going bald,
I think I’m going bald.

“Your behaviour is so male - it’s like you can’t explain yourself to me.”

  • Dar Williams in “Mark Rothko’s Song”

Thanks!

in the immortal words of elton john:

Saturday, saturday, saturday, saturday, saturday, saturday, saturday, saturday, saturday saturday night’s all right.

But in all seriousness:

Blink 182 “the party song”
“some girls try to hard to impress with the way that they dress and those things on their chests and the things they suggest to me…”

“Only love can break your heart” - Neil Young

From The Beatles “Everybody’s got something to hide except for me and my monkey”

“The higher you fly, the deeper you go,
The deeper you go, the higher you fly,
So come on now…”

Sadly, all too true
