Truly pointless, but funny indeed...

“I think that Indy is an acronym for the greatest spectacle in motorsports.”

Johnny Rutherford–race car driver

Direct quote that I heard on the news last night.

Hmm. You know, that really makes me wonder, and I’m certain you can answer, what the heck does Indy mean anyway?
I’m fairly certain it isn’t an acronym, though, right?

I do believe Indy derives from the large race in Indiana… Is there a large race in Indiana?

I dunno.

So it’s not “independent,” as in Indy films?

And here I thought it was named after Dr. Jones

Isn’t it named after Indira Gandhi?

Wouldn’t an acronym for the greatest spectacle in motorsports be GSIM? I wanna see that on some t-shirts.

“Indy” is short for Indianapolis, home of the Indianapolis 500 for the open wheelers (Indy cars, if you will) on Memorial Day Sunday, and the Brickyard 400 for the NASCAR boys in early August.

Mr. Rutherford has obviously spent too much time around the racing fuel vapors…

What a silly thing to say! Everyone knows that “Indy” is actually a palindrome for the greatest spectacle in motorsports. Sheesh!

I thought it was an onomotopoiea.
