Trump ally and conservative pundit Charlie Kirk shot at Utah event [now reported deceased, same date 10SEP2025]

A good point. It sounds like one of those two bits if information could be wrong. Or… maybe this rifle has been collecting dust somewhere for 70-80 years.

This one is available in .30-06.

But you can get one chambered for it. From Mauser’s own website for the Mauser 18, you can get it in the following: .223 Rem., .243 Win., .270 Win., 6,5x55 SE, 6.5 PRC, 6,5 Creedmoor, .308 Win., .30-06 Spring., 7x57, 8x57 IS, 9,3x62, 7mm Rem. Mag., .300 Win. Mag., 8,5x55 Blaser. MAUSER 18 Standard | 80112498

Same for the Mauser 12 and 98.

I feel much worse about the school shooting that happened on the same day, which didn’t get any attention from the upper levels of our government.

Yep.

 This is ridiculous. We should be doing this every time there’s another school shooting.

It’s 63 mm long (when NATO adopted the .30-06, it was named 7.62x63 here on the right side of the pond), or to be precise, 2.4083 inches. A little less than 2.5 inches.

Yes, I’m riffing on the ridiculous precision used when Freedom unit users convert Freedom units to Metric. Why do you ask?

On a continuum with “mourn” on one end and “celebrate” on the other, I’m just off center toward the “celebrate” side re: Charlie Kirk’s death. I’m absolutely at the “celebrate” end when it comes to the silencing of a hateful, spiteful, misogynist voice. Would I prefer that the silencing part happen without the death part? Yeah, I suppose. I still sleep ok. I just fear the knee-jerk to the (and from the) right.

They’re showing a photo of what must be the suspect on television now. Looks like he’s wearing a shirt with a picture of what appears to be a postage stamp with a flag and a weapon superimposed on it. Is anyone familiar with this image?

This is the image on the shirt:

Here’s the dude (xittter link): https://x.com/FBISaltLakeCity/status/1966169520403525760

Almost certainly an eagle.

And being an asshole while not contributing anything.

Oh boy, yes, he looks very ordinary for a random guy in Utah.

I read somewhere - NYT? - that it was an older, imported Mauser.

Yeah! That’s my job!

A lot of European Mausers left behind by German troops in 1945 were converted from 8x57 to .30-06 shortly after WW2. A little later, most of them - plus quite a few that weren’t converted to .30-06 - were converted to 7.62 NATO when NATO approved that round

Thanx for the extensive lecture on guns. BTW, did you know that Charlie Kirk was shot?

Oh. I really didn’t notice, even though it was all over the news all over the Western world.

So really, really sorry to take off on a technical tangent EDIT: After a lot of thread participants already have started discussing technical issues

Hey, nobody is stopping you from starting a thread about the all the different guns that are out there if the topic of this thread bores you.

Last time I checked, it was OK to go somewhat off topic in the Pit. If you’ve got a problem with that, I suggest you take it up with the Pit mods instead of junior modding the thread.

Thanx for the extensive lecture on board etiquette. BTW, did you know that Charlie Kirk was shot by a gun? The type of gun that Norse was talking about?
