Here’s the map of where the shooter was. Various sources are describing it as anywhere from 140 to 200 yards. I took a ruler to Google Maps, and it looked like 150 yards to me.
I’d forgotten that he was the guy who denounced gun violence on this one famous occasion:
The video snippet of Kirk that I remember most is from an event in Idaho, when a supporter asked him when they could finally use their guns. It was 2021. “We’re living under corporate and medical fascism,” the man said. “This is tyranny. When do we get to use the guns? And that’s not a joke—I’m not saying it like that. I mean, literally, where’s the line? How many elections are they going to steal before we kill these people?” Kirk told the audience to stop cheering. “I’m going to denounce that, and I’m going to tell you why. Because you’re playing into all their plans, and they’re trying to make you do this. That’s O.K. Just hear me out. . . . What I’m saying is we have a very fragile balance right now at our current time where we must exhaust every single peaceful mean possible. I will say this. Idaho has not even started to exercise the peaceful means of state sovereignty against the federal government. Not even close. I’ll give you five things Idaho could do right now.” He asked, “Why don’t we start to use that muscle peacefully?”
Yeah, it would have been ridiculous for someone who opposes Kirk to wear a T-shirt identifying himself as someone who opposes Kirk. The shooter would logically want to blend in.
The problem is, he was also the guy who spent more than a decade deliberately creating an environment in which a person can openly say, “When do we get to use the guns? And that’s not a joke”, without anyone being shocked or even mildly surprised by that.
And note, when he “denounced” gun violence, he claimed it was because “That’s what the Democrats want us to do.” Even as he was denouncing violence, he was again demonizing the Democrats in front of a large audience.
“It is so materially insane to think that 1 in 5 American women will be raped in their life … meaning that they’re lying about being raped, that they’re lying about being sexually assaulted. Like a fraternity guy and a sorority girl at age 19 hooking up, both five drinks in at 2 a.m. and all of a sudden, like, she removes consent. Yeah, like, that’s a murky, middle gray area.”
(Of former TV personality Joy Reid, former first lady Michelle Obama, late Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee and Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson): “They’re coming out, and they’re saying, ‘I’m only here because of affirmative action.’ Yeah, we know. You do not have the brain processing power to otherwise be taken really seriously. You had to go steal a white person’s slot to be taken somewhat seriously.”
You did say that @HMS_Irruncible’s statement that A liberal commentator will be shot before very long, it’s just a matter of time ignored the fact that “it” has already happened.
@HMS_Irruncible is quite reasonable in reading “it” to mean “the assassination of a liberal commentator”. In fact, I’m not sure how else it could be read. So I would say that you did, in fact, say so.
CNN conservative commentator Scott Jennings called Jimmy Carter an egotistical antisemite the day after he died, didn’t apologize, and wasn’t fired.
But he gave an emotional on-air eulogy for Charlie Kirk.
Free speech only works in one direction in this country.
Today I was at a church 9/11 cookout for first responders and we were talking about the shooting. I said Kirk was a bad guy, but that he didn’t deserve to be killed.
A cop challenged me on that, asking what he said that was so bad, and I gave him the Greatest Hits.
“Wouldn’t he want all pilots to be qualified?”
“Yes, but he was talking specifically about Black pilots.”
I was one of them. We had a match in Guam against the COMNAVMARIANAS shooting team and trounced them at 200, 300, and 500 yards. The latter was very difficult, even prone.
Exactly. And a single shot weapon isn’t a poor choice, as you’re unlikely to get off more than one shot in that situation (look at the attempt on Trump, where the shooter, after the first miss, just did a spray and pray, as Trump was covered by then).
