I think it was nothing more and nothing less than a Reichsparteitag. The only question remaining is what name each of them will be given.
The truth is that any right-wingers here that support this shit openly are bigoted assholes…and if they support this shit but hide it they are bigoted cowardly assholes. Debating them is akin to debating the dogshit you scrape off the bottom of your shoe with a stick.
I want to give some props to Kirk’s wife. She made a proper eulogy, spoke about her husband’s aims to help young men he saw as lost and forgave the killer because that was what Jesus would do. I may still not agree with her views but I do not doubt she is a Christian and her speech contrasted with the political ones.
She was the thin veneer of semi-civility and she knew it.
Ah, yes. Christian forgiveness. “I forgive you, because I’ve been told to imagine that sky-daddy told me to, but make no mistake: I fully expect you to pay for your transgressions against me and am only so pleased to offer my forgiveness freely because I know and understand that it will be effectively meaningless in this life, the only life that we know for certain we have.”
I LOLed at the Russian Orthodox priest’s remark about the sewer backup, even though it probably earned him a one-way trip to Siberia, and that’s if he was lucky.
My congressperson wants a building at the University of Iowa (!) named after him, or at least she did as of the next day.
I’m mainly surprised an NFL team would let the Kirk funeral be held at its stadium. Usually, sports teams are wary of taking an overtly political stance for or against one political side.
The stadium isn’t owned by the Cardinals, and since they were playing elsewhere this weekend, they had no say on whether the stadium could host this rally disguised as a funeral or not.
Renting that place must have cost a pretty penny. Who paid for it?
I watched ‘highlights’ of it here in Aus, and just wanted to stick my fingers down my throat in reaction to to hypocrisy and fawning of the speakers, including Kirk’s wife. My god, if such a spectacle had happened anywhere else in the world, the rest of the planet would be girding their loins in anticipation of a full-on war!
To me this is the dumbest thing about the hand-wringing and pearl-clutching that people are obligated to do for whatever reason. “You’re celebrating the so-called ‘Red Army’ violent leftists forced an elderly veteran out of his job and then bullied him and his wife into killing themselves and you’re celebrating and making jokes
you people make me sick
“
Of course Charlie Kirk was not Adolf Hitler, because he had no power except his soapbox. If anyone in the upper echelons of Nazidom, he’s closer to Julius Streicher. And I think it is important to note that we realized Streicher could only be bested not through violence but by defeating him in the marketplace of ideas through spirited yet civil deba—
…hold on I just read his Wikipedia article and it looks like he died at the end of a rope, like William Joyce. Never mind; I take back everything I said. The Allies evidently lost World War II after all. I should’ve known that when I searched for a list of Dave Rubin’s guests and didn’t find Streicher or Goebbels anywhere. Checking the Joe Rogan Experience next, but I’m not optimistic
If this was not the pit,
Yes: I would acknowledge that Julius Streicher is also not an appropriate comparison. The real comparison is someone like Leni Riefenstahl, who faced no meaningful consequences and was allowed to remain in pretty good artistic and social standing for most of the rest of her life, because it turns out that the bar for “too corrosive and destructive to remain in high society” is nonexistent as long as you’re polite.
Hey, maybe that’s why we’re here now: all the Nazis we let slime their way back into the arts and politics and the military with self-serving lies and the desire—and means—to rehabilitate their past and the quotidian experience of fascism. Maybe if we didn’t let polite people smile and tell us that, gosh, they had no idea it was so bad, we would have developed a healthy immune response that would’ve dealt with Turning Point USA before it metastasized.
The Honorable gentlewoman from Texas tells it like it is.
The nieceof a civil rights icon is not buying into the hagiography here.
Yes, let’s just let the memory of Turning Point USA and it’s influence go down the memory hole Winston.
….And…. why would this place be an exception? You might still want to do some loin-girding. It brings me no pleasure to say this but as all the financial gurus like to state past history is no guarantee of future performance.
Forgives the alienated young man who actually killed her husband.
Blames entire groups of sexual minorities and those of different political convictions for directly causing his murder.
Bonus hypocrisy points: this is the same political party that told Cindy Sheehan to shut up about the loss of her son.
If they have to have something after the guy, how about a municipal wastewater treatment plant? Or maybe a sludge cake dewatering facility?
She did? We must not have watched the same speech. She made a beautiful eulogy to her deceased husband, talked about marriage and faith a lot, defended dialogue and free speech, preached love for one’s enemies and yes, even forgave the murderer of her husband and father of their 2 children.
Are you sure the problem is not that your brain has rotted away?
You hadn’t caught her address a few days ago then?
If anyone is confused it’s you, but then ingesting all that boot polish can have that effect
Yes I did catch it, feel free to point out where she said any of that but what I really want to do is point the real tragedy in all of this: that the grieving widow of the assassinated political activist didn’t live up to your standards of moral purity and honest respectful political discourse.
