Both attempted Trump assassins were republicans and they’re dropped from memory. The country is different than it was a year ago both in who has the levers and the rhetoric, but I think you’re at least mildly overly cynical if you think the specifics won’t matter.
Thanks. Google isn’t showing that on the first four pages. (I don’t doubt you—it’s just that “Trump says” is definitely dominating.)
He died doing what he loved.
Indeed. And where were the moments of silence for those people?
I saw a statement from Charlie Kirk’s official spokesman before Trump started trumpeting.
Charlie Kirk is about to become the Monster’s Horst Wessel. Count on it.
I was about to say, Kirk’s opponents need to put his name to the Horst Wessel tune.
Also, one wonders if this shooting will have the effect of making other conservative speakers become quiet out of fear of being targeted themselves - or if they will get louder instead.
Spotlight ignominiously stolen from Ashli Babbitt.
Well, let me tell you of the story of a man named Charlie on a tragic and fateful day…
A poor mountaineer barely kept his family fed.
They will try to use this to advance their agenda for sure. I’m more concerned about an impulsive Trumpian overreach that immediately tears the country apart, as opposed to using Kirk’s demise for long-term propaganda.
He talked about violence, took a bullet to the neck
Let our arterial spray
Well, did he ever return?
No, he never returned and his fate is still unmourned
He’ll be a martyr forever to the MAGA right
And he’s the man who never returned
Man, don’t even get me started on the idea of Trump desecrating Arlingon by building a gold-encrusted “Tomb of the Known Soldier” guarded 24x7 by roided-out MMA fighters.
In a really ironic sense of timing, an appeals court ruled today that Florida’s ban on the open carrying of firearms is illegal.
Can’t wait for the Supremes to get a hold of this one.
Soon, we all get to walk around armed to the teeth!
I am genuinely shocked at some of the celebratory posts. To be clear, that is not a judgment. I’m not saying “you should be ashamed of yourselves!” I’ve just come to think of the SDMB’s political leanings as being mainstream democratic milquetoast neoliberal and the immediate response would be to say this is a tragedy and violence is never justified, etc.
Without a doubt Charlie Kirk was actively causing harm and was a net negative for the world. He stoked and justified the sort of sentiment that leads to political violence. He probably hoped that he would cause a similar sort of violence against people he disagreed with, though I don’t know how rhetoric enough to be confident in that one. It’s hard to say it’s a tragedy when someone who makes the world a worse place dies.
It is going to elevate him to martyr status and will justify retaliatory violence against democrats even if it turns out the shooter is a republican. This will be a significant escalation of political violence in this country. Which I’m also not saying is a bad thing, because we’re sleepwalking our way to fascism because apparently life has not been disruptive enough to wake people up or move them to action, an escalation of violence may be necessary for people to realize what the fuck is going on.
The media will no doubt cover this story a thousand times more than they covered the political assassination of the two democrats a couple of months ago (whose names I don’t even know offhand because the news coverage of the incident was so sparse). The “liberal media” will no doubt cover violence against fascists much more and more harshly than the violence fascists commit. Get ready for a “violent left” narrative to get a big boost (even if, as I said, the assassin was a republican).
This is an absolute gift to Trump and the republicans protecting him as this is a big enough story to drive out Epstein coverage.
There’s an outside shot that Charlie fucking Kirk will be the Franz Ferdinand of WW3.
There are posts on Twitter blaming Israel for the Kirk shooting.
No word yet on any “dancing Israelis” but that could be next.
A 48-hour hiatus from social media seems like a good idea.
I will say, it was pretty tasteless of MSNBC to say that the shooting “may have been a supporter shooting off a gun in celebration.”
The two people in question were State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband. In addition State Senator John Hoffman and his wife were also shot but I don’t remember if Mr. Hoffman eventually died of his wounds or recovered.
He spent 3 weeks in the ICU and was then transferred to a rehab facility. On August 25 he made his first public appearance since the shooting.
Per Wiki
John Hoffman and his wife survived according to wikipedia.
SeniorBeef’s point is taken – I do not celebrate any death, but some deaths are more … regrettable? Can’t find the right word.
Of course the right will blame the left – even if Trump himself made the shot.
