That’s not the way it happened. The comment was speculation made by a guest very early on. But you wouldn’t know that if you read right-wing media.

Five posts in this topic and not a one of them with any meaningful content. You’re just making comments for shock value. Knock it off. You do this a lot, and it’s getting old.
I think it is too late for that, and that took place even with no Republican killed before.
Apparently actually in custody now according to the WSJ.
Oh to be clear I wasn’t making any judgement about how people reacted to his death, just personal surprise and an observation. I am most certainly not playing the role of the person judging and admonishing people for making jokes or celebrating his death. There’s a fine moral case that people cause a net negative to the world dying is not a bad thing.
It was weird to me because Reddit, who I expected to be more joyous, was more reserved and civil than expected and this thread so far the opposite which was completely against my expectations.
I’m seeing conflicting reports.
Literally. I’m seeing statements that the person is in custody, then updates saying that isn’t correct and a manhunt is underway.
One bad thing about celebrating such a thing is that it benefits the propaganda of the other side.
I was reading the comments on National Review and… it’s bad. Saying our side is celebrating and openly calling for lots of negative things against us (some but not all violent).
I’m not going to celebrate his death, but I’m also not going to lament it. He made life much more miserable for people I’m close to, and the sentiments he expressed drove people to suicide. Ten years ago I would have felt differently, but my capacity for empathy has been diminished by the complete lack of it from the other side.
I do lament what his killing will do to political discourse and society as a whole, but I’m not sad that he’s no longer around.
Fuck all that hand wringing
We live in a post truth society; people are going to believe whatever they want.
This man reaped what he sowed.
CNN is reporting that a manhunt is underway. Apparently the “suspect in custody” report came from the university and was later corrected by CNN; while a suspect was indeed briefly in custody, it was not the shooter and he was released.
Meanwhile the governor of Utah, who’s actually a fairly moderate Republican if there can be such a creature these days, is fanning the flames by declaring the shooting “a political assassination”. It seems that one of the characteristics of contemporary Republicans is that they “know” things that no one else does, at least when it suits their political agenda.

They said that when Joe Biden ate ice cream. Fuck 'em.
I feel bad for his children but not for him. I’ll save my sympathy for the hundreds of thousands that will die due to the breakup of USAid and the hundreds of thousands that will die due to the gutting of science and stopping of medical research at the hands of the guy with the brain worm that died of starvation. One less MAGA guy- not so much.

I agree with all of this, and I think it’s a reasoned position. You said it better than I could.
I must admit to a twinge of schadenfreude when I read about this. Especially in the eerie happenstance that he was discussing gun violence at the moment of his death.
But this is NOT a good thing. This is just going to make the political climate in this country horrendously worse.

I think it actually does matter who killed him.
If it’s a true lefty, then yes, it will be weaponized.
But let’s say it’s a loony right wing Epstein obsessed Qanon guy. Yes, people will lie and distort his history to blame the left, but it won’t have nearly as much traction.
And in that case I predict that Kirk’s death will have the same impact as Trump’s assassination attempts (which isn’t much, in that it didn’t really cause material changes in our lives)
Every time there is a shooting event involving a celebrity or mass killing, I hope that the perpetrator was a right wing white heterosexual Christian red state male. Anyone else would put kerosene on the fire.
But this is NOT a good thing.
So, conservatives have this belief that liberals are all limp wristed pussies who would sit in the corner and cry while you broke into their homes and raped their wives.
I think if conservatives learn liberals are willing to defend themselves and defend marginalized groups, they may pull back on the evil things they do.
Charlie Kirk said that gun deaths are a price society has to be willing to pay to protect the 2nd amendment. However when he said that, he obviously meant other people’s deaths, like school children. He didn’t mean his own death.

Yeah. 500 nutty right-wing shooters, but it’s the one leftie that they’ll raise high.
Person of interest in custody, per CNN.
Authorities in Utah said there was an active investigation and that there is a person of interest in custody. Investigators say they are interviewing that person. FBI Director Kash Patel has said “the subject for the horrific shooting” was in custody.
Exactly. We’re so far past the point where removing part of Charlie Kirk’s corotid artery in public will move the needle.
Normal doesn’t matter anymore.
