Too lazy to actually look for a cite, but Sarah Palin tossed out an awful lot of “lamestream media”, and during debate rebuttals “I’ll answer in my own way…”.
IMHO Sarah Palin certainly would have used “fake news” if one of her handlers had thought it up…
Also this. Allegations of a Trump supporter planting fake news at the behest of Trump’s White House to distract other supporters from the Russia investigation.
Given that Trump is, himself, one of the sources for the news (he most likely leaked his 2005 tax return cover sheet and various other materials) and that he will deny the existence of quotes of himself that you can physically bring up and play, I think it’s reasonable to say that “fake news” is not a definition, like “blue”, it’s a tine in an overall strategy to keep the media fixated on nonsense and desensitize his base to reality (aka gaslighting). If the New York Times publishes something that works to Trump’s favor, then he’ll promote it either as true (if it’s positive to him) or as false news (if it’s negative but distracts from something he botched or other news reporting on evidence of criminal activity). It’s not a matter of the New York Times always being right or wrong, it’s a matter of what works best for Trump.
Trolling the media is, really, the one genius that Trump has, and it’s a bit unfortunate that they can’t get over it.
I don’t think there is anything new about politicians saying that the news is lying or out to “get” them. I was watching the Ken Burns series about the Vietnam war the other day that featured a telephone conversation with Lyndon Johnson complaining about the news media lying about his policies when the media began questioning the war
Mr Nixon did this throughout the campaign, his administration and right up until the resignation.
Lincoln shut down newspapers and even jailed editors. If I recall correctly Jefferson complained about newspapers reporting negative views. No doubt other examples abound.
I agree that Mr Trump seems no different than a troll and his responses to criticisms are childish. In a way it is the media’s fault for paying so much attention to the trolling combined with sloppy research and reporting instead of accurately laying out the facts.
US citizens are not universally stupid, racist or anti progress. The last 60 years or so have shown that. And we will eventually get back on track when the political pendulum swings back, as it has many times in the past.
Keep pointing out the flaws in Mr Trump’s administration, keep up the pressure on your representatives to stop the abuses and, when they don’t, throw the bums out.
Wasn’t that implied by her not reading any magazines?
