According to what I’ve read, Steele acquired Shearer’s work from an American contact, and passed it on to the FBI, with the caveat that he had not verified the information therein.
I hadn’t read that. Thanks for the clarification. Sounds like he handled it as any professional would.
Here’s a news story about it from The Guardian.
LOL, well, that’s the same article I cited above. My only excuse (not a good one!) is that I merely skimmed the Guardian article, having read about the Shearer memo about a week ago. Or maybe it was a day ago. It all runs together, there’s so much to read to have even a chance of keeping abreast of the whole wretched mess. :o
From the article:
"In an exclusive interview with NBC News, Jeanette Manfra, the head of cybersecurity at the Department of Homeland Security, said she couldn’t talk about classified information publicly, but in 2016, “We saw a targeting of 21 states and an exceptionally small number of them were actually successfully penetrated.” "
If “exceptionally small” = 2, then that’s 10%. Small is such a relative term here…
And here I thought he was fishing…
This is, how you say, very interestink.
We already knew this from Mrs. Reality Winner.
Republicans will continue to downplay the effects of election meddling in 2016, but they’ll declare the results of 2018 “rigged” if they lose control of the House and Senate. I could even see them postponing the elections if they believe they’ll lose. Absolutely nothing would surprise me at this point. I fully expect more chatter in the right wing nuttosphere about a conspiracy to rig the election and a movement to reject the results. I have the distinct feeling that this is all going to come to a head toward the end of this year.
I understand that the full House can vote to override the block. In the (unlikely) event that such a measure does come up for a vote, I fully expect that the Republicans on the committee who initially voted to release the memo will vote not to release it. Because as we all know, “all good Americans must support the President.”
Surprising no one. Welcome to the state-run media world.
Huh, well this is a thing:
Contains links to NYT and The Intercept that give more details.
I would wonder whether the Trump-related materials would have been passed on to Mueller or disposed of. But more, I’m curious who is sharing this story with the press and why?
Somebody American has a copy of them, which probably means that Mueller has or will have them, regardless of their provenance.
My question is how American spies allowed the Russians to pull a fast one. Hasn’t anyone ever heard of inspection and verification? I guess government intelligence is as much of an oxymoron as military intelligence.
and the Donald is tweeting about it
I’d bet that since the Russians (a Russian) was pushing Kompromat, he thinks that proves “No Collusion”
I’d suggest replacing the word “U.S.” with “Mike Pompeo” in his tweet, since that would seem to be the figure that he is referring to but hoping nobody will know enough to understand.
The man is an idiot.
Unfortunately, so are a lot of people.
Russian intel pushing possibly fake material with the intention that the story would get released. Creates more confusion/arguments in US politics, which is the point.
Bingo! This is precisely what was intended. I would be surprised if any career intelligence officer truly believed that they were going to get a deal with Russia to return state secrets – not even a street drunkard is that thick. But the follow-up contacts and the efforts to find out what was stolen, who stole it, and what they intend to do with it can easily be spun into a conspiracy theory, as part of a continuing misinformation campaign by Putin’s Russia - a rather successful campaign I’d add.
Trump doesn’t assume proof - Trump doesn’t live in a world of proof. He just needs there to be a distraction and another talking point for Devin Nunes and Charles Grassley to investigate with their shit-ass committees. And that’s what they will do because billionaires like the Mercers expect them to do it, or their campaign cash will simply evaporate.
Can you explain how the government keeping something classified, even if for no good reason = state run media?
Here’s a hint: Is there a NYT front page story explaining to us why we are all so much better off by not having access to this memo?
