Trump can't block critics on Twitter

But if I’ve understood correctly, “blocking " on Twitter is more like “banning” here on SDMB, and “mute” is more like our " ignore” ?

That is, when you block someone on Twitter you’re preventing them both from reading what you’ve posted and from replying to it? (“That Biden is my political enemy! No-way I’m letting him talk on my threads! He’s not getting air-time from me!”)

But “mute” on Twitter just means you don’t see posts from that person, but they don’t know about it, and they can still read your posts and reply? (“That Biden is such a bore. I’m not reading anything he posts!”)

If I’ve got that right, I can understand the Court decision. “Blocking” keeps some individuals from participating in a discussion on a government communications medium, because the President (US government) doesn’t like what they’ve said in the past. That sounds like a content based restriction on speech on a government forum.

I do remember the earlier ruling saying that Trump could use the mute feature, which is indeed as NP says. It simply means that users post will not appear on your timeline or notifications.

The only thing NP missed is that hypothetical Trump can still go to muted Bidens page directly and read his tweets.

I actually suspect that people use blocks more often than necessary for their inrtensions, as it seems to be used by default. Being able to ignore someone without them knowing is very useful, and is what most other sites mean by “blocking.”

California state senator Richard Pan is also being sued by a couple of antivaxers who were blocked from his Twitter account.

Help, help, they’re being repressed!
