More accurately, his answer was full of hypocrisy. If these people had anything more than two brain cells to rub together, they would be asking themselves what it says about their values that their first choice for a policymaker is a breathtakingly ignorant unhinged pathological sociopath and serial liar who’s been twice impeached and is facing four criminal indictments.
Whenever I hear the latest about that asshole, it always makes me say, “Jesus Christ!”.
I heard that he was the messiah from a woman who appeared otherwise sane.
I used to say that if Jesus Christ himself appeared and denounced Trump as a loser, Trumpers would abandon Jesus Christ. I hate that I was right. When I hear the messianic nonsense, I quote Exodus 22:20:
“He that sacrificeth to any god, save unto the LORD only, he shall be utterly destroyed.”
Sometimes I follow it up with Matthew 15:8-9:
“‘This people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’”
Nobody’s said anything to me decrying “turn the other cheek,” but if they do, I’ll have to remember Mark 7:9:
And he said to them, “You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition!
(I have these written down at my desk. I don’t have them memorized. I use the quotation from Mark to back up Matthew 22:36-40, which I use whenever someone who claims they’re Christian but says hateful things about LGBTQ folks or liberals or whoever.)
Maybe we should see if he can walk on water. If he can, he’s the messiah; if he sinks, he can finally put an end to all the witch hunts he’s so concerned about.
I’m not overly religious but I have read the Bible.
I’ve had middle-of-the-night fears there really is an Antichrist
And if you confront them about what Trump does, the response is “Oh, everyone knows presidents don’t actually do anything; it’s about the dignity of the office”, or some such claptrap.
A few years back, I heard some Evangelicals compare Trump to Cyrus the Great. For those who don’t know, Cyrus, the Persian King, holds a special place in Judaism because after conquering Babylon, he freed the Jews, invited them to return to Jerusalem, and provided them with gold to rebuild their temples. i.e. He’s a notable figure in scripture because of this even though Cyrus isn’t Jewish himself.
Some Evangelicals will tell you Trump is their version of Cyrus. i.e. God is using Trump as his instrument even if he isn’t one of the faithful. But a big difference here is that Jews didn’t pick Cyrus. They didn’t look at Cyrus and say, “We choose you.”
Don’t tell me how it ends!
I believe the last word is Amen!
That one I’ve never heard. A lot of them seem to think the president has far more power than the position actually has. i.e. They view the president more as a king rather than an executive in federal system with checks & balances.
Read Daniel 7.
In the 20s, I think.
There’s some scary stuff in there.
I’m in the UK so don’t get all the info but does anyone know how Trump got all the evangelicals to believe that everything against Trump is lies from people who want to see him defeated?
My understanding of the 2016 election was that the evangelicals were concerned about Trump, because he built a lot of his wealth on sex and gambling as well as saying he was against abortion the main way he got them on board was by selecting Pence as his running mate.
Roll forward to 2020 and Trump says the election was rigged and asks Pence to declare it void and Pence says “I can’t do that because it wasn’t rigged” (backed up by a number of other republicans such as those that refused to “find” 10,000 votes in Georgia. How come all the evangelicals believe Trump and not Pence, who is essentially one of their own?
Trump is not the lord, he’s nothing be a fraud.
Get out of here, Trump! Get out of my life!
Fox News
I was born and raised and still live in a conservative xtian location and my conclusion is that about 20% of devout evangelicals/conservative xtians really do earnestly want to follow Jesus’ teachings (or their perception of them) and it’s in that community that we find the greatest number of anti-Trump conservative religious protestants.
But the other 80% seem to me to just enjoy feeling they are among the ‘saved’ and really look forward to watching all those other people burn in hell. So they’re ready to embrace Trump.
I see the word evangelical and immediately think Jerry Falwell, Jim and Tammy Faye Baker.
The religious right have tried to distance themselves from that. Unless they’re ignorant.
The Trump devotees around here are more of the mouth breathing redneck type. Haven’t seen a bible since their Sunday school days, if then.
There is a skin-head faction, I’ve heard.
They’re not thumping bibles either.
He has his followers that aren’t gonna be convinced. Ever.
As others have said indirectly, Trump himself didn’t do anything to get them to believe. QAnon, Fox News, et al did, along with their belief system being very flexible when they want it to be.
Think of how seductive it is to be told that the most patriotic and pious thing you can do is to get rich.
