I saw a report on MSNBC where they said Trump was going to go after certain Non-Government Organizations he dislikes, and declaring them as “terrorist organizations”. Which NGO’s is he likely to go after; NAACP, Black Lives Matter, Color of Change? This has got me really worried, that he can just label any NGO he doesn’t like as a “terrorist organization”!

You may (or may not) be surprised to learn that there is no formal list of domestic terror organizations across the federal government even after events like the 1993 Oklahoma City bombing, and that different agencies from the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Department of Treasury, Department of Homeland Security, Department of the Interior, Department of Energy, et cetera all maintain individual lists of terrorist, organized crime, and financial crime organizations. One of the unsung accomplishments of the Biden Administration was to launch a “National Strategy for Countering Domestic Terrorism” to perform a comprehensive review of U.S. Government efforts to address domestic terrorism preparatory to coordinating law enforcement, counterintelligence, and counterterrorism efforts to identify, prevent, and punish terrorism.
As the chief executive, once he is inaugurated as President, Trump can tell the head of the DOJ, DHS, or any other agency to designate some group as a “domestic terrorist organization” even if they pose no physical, financial, cyber, or other actual threat because while there are federal laws defining terrorism and terroristic acts (18 USC Chapter 113B) the definition of “domestic terrorism” is sufficiently broad to include the Upright Citizens Brigade, the Universalist Unitarian Church, and probably the Girl Scouts. And if they refuse, he can fire them and find someone who will make that designation. It is one of the many unchecked powers the chief executive has, and that most are sensible enough to not employ without counsel and consideration, two qualities that Trump has only in a state of complete abeyance.
