Those Los Angelinos, bragging how they’re on the cutting edge of every trend. Getting shot by police with “less than (but not entirely exclusive) lethal” while in one’s home is so 2020
Not intended as one. The title mirrors the thread about invading Greenland and Panama. That’s the only parody intended.
While there are some incidents of the above - and I wholeheartedly despise those acts - that wasn’t happening where that reporter was shot. It’s not like she was standing next to a crowd of people throwing rocks or breaking into stores, that there might be lehitimate reason to be shooting rubber bullets in her direction.
She’s standing in the open, clearly visible, clearly a reporter and not a rioter, looter, or even protester.
It’s not “the hazard of being in a war zone,” it’s “the hazards of reporting on police behavior.”
It’s not that far off. Both institutions are being deployed in service of policies directed by a wanna-be dictator who is playing fast and loose with the Constitution and defying court orders to spread fear and misery through the population. Both services are acting in service to a fascist overthrow of the government.
They may not be fascists themselves and they may be deployed legally for nominally legal purposes. They are still being used to further a fascist agenda.
Imagine what will happen when the marines get there. At least LAPD is trained to diffuse (which obviously did not happen here). Marines are trained in combat and they will be facing (mostly) unarmed civillians.
First, citation needed that the LAPD, or in fact any police force in the US, is trained to defuse (I’m assuming that’s what you meant) situations.
Second, the military is used to working under rules of engagement, and follows international law like the Geneva Convention. That gives them a big leg up on the police.
Revised LAPD policy requires officers to attempt de-escalation before using guns. **A new policy will now require Los Angeles Police Department officers to try to defuse a tense encounter by using time, communication and distance before resorting to their guns.**Apr 18, 2017
The military is not trained to abide by the laws of the countrys they operate in. They are a horrible choice for law enforcement.
Neither are the police. So the fact that the military at least follows international law puts them one up on the police.
The LAPD is notorious for being a bunch of thugs. Even in a nation where cops in general are thugs, they stand out.
Indeed:
Full Title: LAPD Accused of ‘Trapping’ Protesters Before Curfew ‘On Purpose’ to Arrest Them for ‘Breaking Curfew’: “They’re telling everyone to leave, but they literally blocked us in here.”
The Los Angeles Police Department is accused of cornering and detaining peaceful protestors ahead of curfew on Wednesday to justify sweeping arrests.
Videos on TikTok show demonstrators confined between a building and a wall of LAPD officers lining the street before the citywide 8:00 p.m. curfew took effect.
“They’re saying nobody leaves,” TikTok user @jaiiymoses said in one video. “They’ve trapped us in here, they surrounded us all in here. It was a peaceful protest, no one got violent…They’re waiting until curfew to arrest us all.”
And previously in this thread is a video of shooting a reporter in the back and them shooting another woman (not-lethal gun), walking home alone and doing nothing threatening.
From Kristi Noem’s news conference in Los Angeles;
“We are not going away. We are staying here to liberate this city from the socialist and the burdensome leadership that this governor and mayor have placed on this country and what they’ve tried to insert in this city."
I think we’ve moved from wants to to is.
The Geneva Conventions have nothing to do with law enforcement.
Yes, that’s the police view. Which is why they routinely violate them.
Personally, I think that if some weapons and tactics are so heinous that we expect people to not use them even when at war, then governments probably shouldn’t use them against their own citizens, either.
I agree, but that’s not what the Geneva Conventions are about.
The purpose of the GCs is to distinguish between those who are valid targets in war and those who not, and how those who are not should be protected. They identify, basically, four groups of people who are not valid targets:
- The sick and wounded and people dedicated specifically to helping the sick and wounded
- Prisoners of war
- People who are shipwrecked or escaping from stricken aircraft
- Civilians
Law enforcement DOES target civilians. Not to kill them, but they do use force to stop them from doing things or to accost and arrest them. The GCs aren’t relevant to law enforcement. Police officers ARE civilians, and they work with civilians.
If you wanna know how police officers should be acting, ask Robert Peel.
OK, maybe not the Geneva Conventions, then. Which international law is it that prohibits the use of chemical weapons?
The unoriginally named Chemical Weapons Convention.
Which, IIRC, says you can use tear gas for law enforcement.
“You gotta make sure you have enough police to fend off these…eight people.”
