The extent of these protests, and any outright rioting and damage, of course depends on the news source as of now. Are there any Dopers in the L.A. area who can tell us more?
I did consider posting this in the Politics board, but it’s not about any election.
Moderating:
No, but it can fairly be considered political. Moving.
If any of his toadies warned Trump that this escalation was likely to become violent, he undoubtedly said “I hope so”. And heaven help any protester who isn’t a native-born US citizen.
It’s going to be worth watching what arises out of this. And scary, too.
Just after @Aspenglow post, the ad directly below it offered dental hygienist positions.
But seriously, I’m in LA, Sherman Oaks. Not sure if it’s really calmed down in Compton and Paramount yet.
I know not a single Republican has ever died from a case of hypocrisy but it is tragic and comedic at the same time to hear Noem talking about how anyone who touches a law enforcement officer is in for a world of hurt. I guess that policy went into effect on Jan 7th, 2021.
They’ve been waiting to manipulate some situation. This might be it.
It just seems like a repeat of the tactics used in Portland during the Black Lives Matters protests, only using National Guard instead of just “Homeland Security” thugs.
This is definitely a test situation and bears close watching, IMHO.

From the article:
President Trump took extraordinary action on Saturday by calling up 2,000 National Guard troops to quell immigration protests in California, making rare use of federal powers and bypassing the authority of the state’s governor, Gavin Newsom.
It is the first time since 1965 that a president has activated a state’s National Guard force without a request from that state’s governor, according to Elizabeth Goitein, senior director of the Liberty and National Security Program at the Brennan Center for Justice, an independent law and policy organization. The last time was when President Lyndon B. Johnson sent troops to Alabama to protect civil rights demonstrators in 1965, she said.
Mr. Newsom, a Democrat, immediately rebuked the president’s action. “That move is purposefully inflammatory and will only escalate tensions,” Mr. Newsom said, adding that “this is the wrong mission and will erode public trust.”
Notice the difference. Johnson sent National Guard to protect protesters. Somehow I doubt it’s the same mission this time.
Without due process, this is a futile defense.
Everyone should remember that in addition to the potential horror of fascist violence in LA, the ramifications of what happens could go far beyond a single day.
NG troops and their mid-level commanders are largely just everyday Americans, and I don’t think it will be quite so easy to force them to be the tools of fascists. We’ll see.
The activists are calling for large numbers to come out and I think this could be the start of something awful.
No masks will be permitted. People are going to get hurt.
“No masks” on whom? Protesters? Can you elaborate how they might enforce that (e.g. arrest everyone wearing a mask)?
eta: BTW, according to LA’s mayor, no national guard troops were actually deployed in LA.
Yes, protestors. Noem was vague about how it will be enforced and there were also some audio issues on Face the Nation.
It seems that protesting excessive cruelty in dealing with immigrants must be met with iron boots and tear gas. I’m sure the bullets will come shortly. But attempting to overthrow democracy is no reason to deploy the National Guard.
My wife, like me, a native Southern Californian, has been watching and reading about the protests in L.A. She said, ‘Wow. Those Southern Californians don’t mess around!’ Just now she commented, ‘Incredible,’ and ‘It’s about damned time.’ This is the devout Christian who was formerly apathetic about politics, and was mad at me for years because she thought I followed politics too much. ‘It will pass. Old men die.’ Now she’s going to the freeway banner hanging on Friday, and we’re going to the No Kings rally.
To be honest, those coming out to protest should practice the non-violent tactics of Gandhi and Dr King so that it’s clear to all concerned which side is the violent one.
Yes. I just shared an article by Robert Reich telling people not to fall for Trump’s trap. We will be non-violent.
Maybe smoke bombs could be deployed, ala Stalag 17.
