This is better expressed “heaven help any protestor who doesn’t look white”, because we’ve seen this admin isn’t super picky about the fine points of credentialism when they want to ship people to El Salvador.
Even being white with a conventional haircut may not be 100% foolproof, but for the time being, that’s the greatest predictor of whether somebody gets due process or civil rights.
“MASKS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED to be worn at protests. What do these people have to hide, and why???” the president posted on Truth Social.
To hide Rubella and other respiratory illnesses that your health department denies are a problem, you orange cad!!
Didn’t his stormtroopers wear masks recently?
well I’l be darned, they did.
ICE Agents Routinely Mask Up When Seizing People—That’s Wrong | Cato at Liberty Blog
They will obey, essentially to a man, orders to violently oppress the public. Absolute fantasy to think otherwise.
Cue ICE stormtroopers. Get out there, boys! Must have a scene to defend!
Maybe not L.A. proper, but many of the 'burbs? Yup.
Just like soldiers always obey wannabe dictators, right? Especially weekend warriors. Those guys definitely embody the concept of “mindless obedience”.
Here’s a livestream of a protest. I have a feeling that most of them didn’t even think about ICE until the troops came. And no, CNN can’t show this live, for reasons that are immediately obvious.
It’s not at all obvious. Why would CNN be unable to show it?
Did you see some of the signs?
This is a dangerous game with optics that are bound to backfire on Trump. For MAGAs looking to the past for a time of greatness, who’d have thought they would have landed on May 4, 1970.
No, I didn’t click the link. Was there a “CNN Sucks!” sign?
There are a lot of “Fuck ICE” signs.
Although I’m sure CNN knows how to blur as well as anyone. Even we can do it here on the SDMB.
CNN can show that. And if this goes Trump’s way, there’s bound to be actually terrible things happening that CNN will have no problems showing.
If it’s necessary to blur signs containing obscenities. I don’t think it is.
I’m about an hour south of LA, but my FB feed is filled with many friends from LA to San Diego. I’m seeing an enormous amount of anger from just about everyone and 90% of the posts on my feed are about this topic. People are getting pissed off, even those that almost never post anything remotely political. I don’t see how this ends well at all.
I don’t, either. But I don’t pretend to know or understand the sensibilities of CNN. I don’t watch them.
Beyond just the uncertainty of how individual guardsmen and guardswomen will act and react on the ground, for Trump and co to positively engineer an atrocity, think of all the layers of bureaucracy this has to go through - Trump orders SecDef, SD orders senior flag level commanders, senior flag commanders order junior flag level commanders, they order mid-level commanders, and mid level commanders order the units themselves. That’s a whole lot of opportunities to drag one’s feet, slow their roll etc., if any of those commanders fear the orders might be unlawful (and thus subject them to future consequences). Sure, the NG is likely to show up where ordered, but barring an immediate crisis (i.e. protesters pulling guns or bombs), or a low level breakdown like Kent State (which is always possible), a lot of officers would need to obey unlawful orders without question or delay for an atrocity to occur.
So it sounds like the national guard are not actually protecting ICE raids, but just interfering with protests…
Is this the case?
