Ha! I took the questionnaire and it said I MAY be eligible to move permanently to Canada as a self-employed artist. I’m actually retired with a livable income and I’m doing some creative writing these days. (IOW I’m not going on welfare immediately. Or ever.)
For others, the link Euphonious Polemic posted is to a Questionnaire to determine if you **might **be eligible to move to Canada. It’s very preliminary, just a screening really, but quite interesting. Fun to take.
I think you would find BC rather lefty – sort of our version of California-liberal, only more extreme. Full of hippie wannabes who hate everything east of the Rockies, especially Toronto. I recommend sensible, down-to-earth Ontario. I have a spare room you can have. The dogs are of course very welcome and would be treated like kings. Leave the cats in Texas.
When I took the quiz I said “Ontario” just for the heck of it. I lived in Niagara Falls, NY, in the early 1960s. In fact, it was there in geometry class at Madonna High School (sophomore year) that we got the news that President Kennedy had been shot in Dallas. Texas was our next destination, and I assumed it was the Land of Barbarians.
Niagara Falls (NY) hit some very hard times in the decades following. I’ve tried to explore it on Google Maps and much has changed.
Welcome! I suggest Salt Spring Island. Full of artists and interesting folk. You would probably fit in just fine there. ETA: Yes, lots of hippies. Great folks.
Thanks for posting the link to that. Am I understanding correctly that in order to even apply for something like the Federal Skilled Worker Program, you first have to travel to one of the testing centers in Canada and take a $265 English test?
Don’t listen to him, ThelmaLou! He willingly acknowledges that the place is full of crazed hippies, but thinks it’s a good thing!
OTOH, in these rankings of health care quality in different countries and provinces, BC does score an “A” along with Switzerland and Sweden. Ontario gets a “B”, ranking just behind Australia, Norway, and France, but ahead of Japan and Germany and way ahead of Finland and the UK, and is the #2 province in Canada for health care quality and outcomes. The US overall gets a “D”, so far behind that you wouldn’t notice the difference between “A” and “B”!
