Furthermore, the assumption that Trump and his MAGA allies are making is that we can all just let death happen, that people will just die and we’ll get used to it. They’re not getting the fact that hospitals could be so badly overwhelmed - not just in a handful of cities but all over the country - that health systems collapse completely or nearly so. Remember: summer was supposed to be the respite, the time of the year when we tend to get sick the least. What do you think fall is going to look like?
It will be hard for even the staunchest of Trump allies to resist calls to shutter the economy then, and even if they don’t, the pandemic will probably dominate the headlines with scenes of overflowing ICUs and trucks full of dead bodies that stores might just shut down on their own and customers might just stay home anyway.
For those who point out that it’s just 1% who die, that’s true, but that won’t matter when the sheer numbers of people who get infected gets into the hundreds of thousands per week. We’re talking about images of thousands dead, and horror stories about thousands of others - including many previously healthy 20, 30, or 40-somethings coming down with debilitating illnesses that require weeks of care and may likely send them into financial ruin.

Trump’s also missing the reality that he’s failing the leadership test. People want to feel the President is doing something during an ongoing crisis - even if they don’t know if what he’s doing is right or wrong. A President who is perceived as not doing enough will be a one-term President. Examples are Hoover and the Great Depression, Johnson and public rioting, and Carter and the hostages in Iran. Trump is looking at the same situation with both Covid19 and BLM protests.
