Trump Threatens to Send in the Feds to Chicago

Finally some action.

Maybe you should re-word this. Or maybe not, I don’t know.

Ah, didn’t see it. I thought cause of the title of the topic that’s what you meant, but never mind.

It was a dorm environment. That’s why I said that.

It’s a little known fact that formerly ineffective law enforcement efforts will start working if you merely say “go in hard” and “take no prisoners*” beforehand.

Additionally, corruption is easily cleansed if only you “toss it out”. Too many people overthink it; all that is required is some corruption tossing. You just get in there, and start tossing.

As to convictions, I’m with you. A new strategy of making them stick should be applied. Enough already with the former “don’t make them stick” plan.

It’s all so easy.

*I’m assuming you are talking figuratively. If you literally mean that the Feds should just conduct a wave of extra-judicial killing then I think I have to step away from your otherwise excellent plan.

It is odd that anyone would have a problem with this idea as presented. I doesn’t have anything to do with Trump. Chicago has really gotten out of control to point where killings have surpassed New York and Los Angeles COMBINED and now ranks above Iraq and Afghanistan in combat deaths since 2001.

I don’t care how blue Chicago is. It is a hopelessly corrupt war zone in certain areas and the political machine that enables it needs to be reformed. The St. Valentine’s Day massacre was big news in 1929 and still famous but that is just a typical weekend these days.

If the state of Illinois can’t or won’t handle it on their own, it is time for the Feds to step in and restore order. Talk about draining the sewer? Chicago has needed a platoon of plumbers for a very long time. We shouldn’t have a major city that dysfunctional and corrupt in the nation’s heartland. I have no idea why Obama didn’t do much about it because it is his adopted home city.

This is right out of the Nationalist Dictator’s playbook. Suppress the “criminal element” in identifiable “ghettoes” (already conveniently identified in the public’s mind with a racial minority) and those who look like them, and play the hero of the good people out in the countryside.

Trump may not know how to run the government, but he knows what he came to do, and he studied Hitler well.

What do you suggest? Strict gun control, machine politics and Democratic welfare policies are failing spectacularly for the same people you claim to be concerned about and have been for decades. Almost any policy change would be better. NYC went from a shithole to a veritable Disneyland in less than 20 years because of radical policy changes. Why wouldn’t something similar work for Chicago?

Wow! That’s pretty quick Godwinisation.

Something I suspect will happen in every thread mentioning Trump…

Obama probably didn’t send in the troops because people would whinge about Posse Comitatus and call him a Muslim dictator.

Honestly, I don’t know what the answer is. And I don’t think a third-rate real estate developer does either. But I think Trump knows he can kill niggers by the truckload and become more popular as a share of the electorate.

Trump Godwinned himself. Heck, he’s passed Hitler in self-regard and is approaching one of the Kims of N. Korea.

Or because the place was his political HQ and run by his former Chief of Staff?

Vast swathes of Chicago are already as nice as anywhere in NYC.

Trump’s tweet came slightly over an hour after Bill O’Reilly did a segment about violence in Chicago.

I guess Papa Bear is now our National Security Advisor.

That’s why the word “carnage” was in quotes in Twitler’s tweet… he was reacting to the O’Reilly segment.

You left out “jobs”. As in quality jobs which may or may not be glamorous but do pay sufficiently for someone to put a roof over their heads and food on the table. If you don’t have jobs nothing is going to change. That means you need jobs for ex-cons (or they’ll just go back to crime) as well as the “good kids”.

America is already the world leader in killing or locking up its citizens. Will shooting more and locking more up ever cure anything?

  • The city of Chicago had strict gun control but it’s no secret that if you crossed the city border guns were more readily available. Hell, some members of the Lake County, Indiana Sheriff’s department have gone to jail over the past few years for funneling weapons to drug gangs. Strict gun control never worked in Chicago because it didn’t exist outside the city limits.

  • Machine politics are indeed a problem with city jobs used to reward machine loyalists and certain communities being systematically ignored and neglected for decades. Why are we surprised those same communities are now cesspoools?

  • Welfare is not “Democratic”, in fact, a Democrat (Bill Clinton) drastically changed and reduced the welfare available back in 1996. Cutting benefits does not seem to have improved the situation. Of course, when you deny something like food stamps for life to someone with a past drug conviction, and that person also can’t get a job, don’t be surprised when said person chooses a profession like theft so they can eat because damn few people are going to simply starve to death to make the “tough on crime” crowd happy.

Radical policy changes that were accused of trampling human rights and harming the innocent, including the death of people who weren’t doing anything wrong at the time the cops shot them. Funny how people are so ready to “send in the troops” to areas where they don’t personally live. It’s easy to “get tough” when you’re not the one who has to live with the consequences.

Rounding up bad guys is only treating the symptom. Don’t get me wrong - you typically do need to do something about the symptoms when treating a disease. But ignoring the real causes, or attributing the problems to the incorrect causes, is not going to fix the problem(s).

You need to eliminate corruption in the city governments. It’s deeply entrenched. I’ve heard people try to excuse Rod Blogoevich’s misconduct as “everyone else is doing it, they just targeted him.” You know what? If everyone else was/is doing the same sort of things they should ALL go to jail. All of them. Which would, admittedly, gut city, county, and state governments in Illinois and even into neighboring Northwest Indiana Here’s an example of an East Chicago politician who was re-elected while sitting in Federal prison on murder charges. This kind of shit has to stop. Having to install essentially new governments is going to be an issue but if you don’t root out the corruption the problem will never end. I’m not sure how you root out cronyism, bribery, influence peddling, and the rest that have been in place since the 19th Century but it truly is contributing to the problems in Chicago.

The local political machine has systematically neglected many of the neighborhoods that are now warzone, either because they saw no profit (monetary or political) in helping those neighborhoods, or wanted to have a scapegoat, or just out and out prejudice. Steer jobs and businesses away from a place, neglect the infrastructure, underfund the schools, and don’t provide adequate policing and why is anyone surprised at the results? If you don’t change that, “send in the troops” will only result in clamping down the lid on a pressure cooker, leading to an explosion down the line,

Chicago has violent neighborhoods due to decades of neglect, wink-wink segregation, official disinterest, lack of opportunity and a resulting hopelessness.

I remain unconvinced that Trump has sustained any real damage as of yet. It’s true that his popularity is down, but it’s been down even farther at times on the campaign trail, and he still won.

People are annoyed by his tweeting and a few of his supporters are probably objective enough to realize that he’s not establishing a conciliatory tone. I mean if Obama was a race-baiter and a divider like the right said he was, what is Trump? But annoyed doesn’t translate to real loss of confidence.

That will only happen when people begin living with and feeling the consequences of his decisions.

Trump makes a lot of vague promises. What’s new?
