To everyone who thinks other Republicans will rise up and take back the party, please answer me one question:
Going back to 2016, can you name one Republican officeholder who has publicly renounced Donald Trump and then been re-elected? Granted, Mitt Romney managed to get elected Senator in 2018, but he’s already announced he won’t run for reelection.
AFAICT every Republican who’s come out against Trump has either been defeated in their primary or just gave up and retired. The Republican Party belongs to Donald Trump, and it’s going to take more than a few criminal convictions or the long slide into dementia to keep him from being the candidate in November.
Dan Newhouse?
I’m in Mass, and it’s “common knowledge” around here that the very popular Republican governor, Charlie Baker, didn’t seek re-election because he’d come out as anti-Trump and would be primaried out.
Of course, that same Mass Republican party went full-MAGA in a state where it’s probably a safe bet the Republicans are a bit more moderate, and has since itself disintigrated.
(By common knowledge I mean stated repeatedly on various radio programs and the like, by people generally in the know; I acknowledge this can’t be stated as a fact)
Nitpick: my impression is that the Republicans in Mass are just as crazy as anywhere else. I just think that there are far too few of them to win an election without a huge number of unaffiliated voters who won’t support a MAGA candidate.
Interesting thing about Newhouse (and also David Valadao of California, who also voted to impeach and was reelected.) Both of them won open primaries with Democrats and Republicans on the same ballot.
Have there been any Republicans who won a Republican only primary?
It is a very good point. The thing is, both dogs and elephants must, I speculate, give into Pavlovian conditioning over the long run. The pachyderm got jolted in 2018, 2020, and 2022, and he is now looking at the mammoth bones on the tundra and wondering if his own will soon join them.
He is positioned to bankrupt the GOP, and I think that is the thing that finally causes the abused animal, as stupid and insensate as it is, to throw off its master.
It’s the old quandary: money or power?
“I am the maker of rules, dealing with foo-oo-ools, I can cheat you blind.”
Well, the GOP would certainly hope for both, but soon, if they stick with Trump, they will have neither!
I disagree, oh, not with the eventually bankrupting, but I think instead that the remnants of “traditional” Republicans feel they can live with Trump in the very short term, as the odds are very good that he’ll be dead in the short-to-medium term. And once he’s gone, they’ll swoop back in and recover their traditional influence when MAGA is fighting to the death over who will inherit the mantle. And they may be right.
Trump can and will do a lot of damage in that short term, and as pointed out upthread, has in fact already DONE so, but rather than stand out right now in working actively against him, they tut-tut quietly in the background while playing the long game.
Not a bad overall scenario prediction at all. Nicely done.
I’ll make a small comment about this bit:
History is replete with aristocracies that calmly believed they could stage-manage the rabble, or outlast them. And thereby preserve their privilege. So they calmly and carefully played a long game.
An awful lot of whom ended up hanging from a lamppost or guillotined. The MAGAts aren’t that bad (yet), but although I don’t doubt the landed gentry, CEO brigade, and Wall Street, etc., expects to take back their party, they may well prove to be quite mistaken about how easy, or inevitable, it will actually be.
Their problem is that, I believe, the long game is a lot shorter than they think!
Yes, and… what are they taking back? Crumbs, rubble, grease from the dedicated grease dumpster (on fire or not)?
How long before MAGA claims Trump was a Deep State operative sent to destroy the GOP?
More likely MAGA claims the GOP was a Deep State operation sent to destroy Trump.
