Some of them have fully drunk the Flavoraide, and are convinced that he is god on earth and that anything said against him is fake news conjured by the Devil himself.
Then you have those who think that he has some rough edges, but overall is doing the right thing.
Finnlly there are those who recognize that he’s scum, but think that all politicians are scum and at least he’s is their scum.
But this is uniquely high-stress for Trump. He’s not used to be told to sit down and shut up. He truly believes that he should be allowed to do or say anything he wants, every minute of the day. This may be the first time in his life he’s ever had to do anything that he wasn’t in complete control of, following someone else’s schedule, and not being allowed to fire someone if they don’t kiss his ass.
He said that Trump could die. I agree. There’s no question in my mind that the stress will move him closer to a level of incapacitation whereat he simply won’t be able to continue his candidacy.
Yup. The author didn’t say otherwise. He was mostly saying why the trial will be terrible for Trump. The possibility of death was secondary.
If you’re a Democrat, then I don’t get this level of hostility towards kos. It’s explicitly a site that cheers on the Democratic party. Plus, people constantly fail to distinguish between staff articles and diaries. This was a diary. The quality can range between that of pro journalism to complete trash. Staff articles are more or less uniformly excellent and written in a sober style.
It’s clear they have no contingency plan in place. Hell, I don’t think they even have a plan of what to do after they give the shambling mound the nomination.
I am more confident than when I wrote the OP, however, that His Orangeness will not even make it to the convention. Trump looks terrible and is barely holding it together, mentally and physically. Plus, he may very well be put in the slammer as a result of the NY trial.
There can be a difference between cheerleading and deluding oneself. I’m as liberal and progressive as the rest of us here, and always look for signs of reassurance, but I do try to temper that by filtering it through the cold light of day, as it were. I’m sure Kos has some sober, leveled articles from time to time—maybe even often—and that’s great, but let’s not fall into the same trap of emotional thinking the other side tends to.
Disagree - in addition to the points @Horatius made (in that Trump has likely never had to shut up and have someone in power over him other than his father, which is a huge part of what Trump is IMHO) there’s the substantial evidence (not proof) that these trials, especially the one in NYC will break his image of being wealthy, powerful, and successful.
In my read of Trump, that’s a hell of a lot more important than a prison sentence, which, as I’ve stated in other threads, he’s likely to get reduced to house arrest at most given his age and probable actual health once his obfuscating doctors aren’t allowed.
He’d rather be rich and admired even under house arrest than poor, broke and ignored even if he was completely free.
So yeah, he’s under a lot of stress. Granted, he’s self-obsessed enough to also believe that he can skate past this as he has so many times before, and likely sufficiently insulated normally to be mostly comfortable in those assumptions. But in court, being forced to see it, hear it, and not be able to respond? Yeah, much higher than normal stress for him.
I certainly disagree that hostility toward Daily Kos is some sort of litmus test of whether someone is a “true” Democrat. I agree that they’ve had some insightful staff articles (although I personally think most of the community articles are trash) but you’re often only getting half an argument – i.e. the data and information they cite are factually correct and their arguments valid, but they tend to ignore or offhandedly discount conflicting arguments and information. It’s an outlet by partisans for partisans. And that’s fine. Just not my cup of tea.
I don’t think kos leads us into incorrect thinking. If things are bad, people tend to say that they are, and the staff articles provide facts and ways to deal with things we might not like (as do some of the diaries).
I think it’s a great site to keep up to date on politics from the perspective of our side, and it also suffices to cover a lot of my general news coverage needs. I’m a fan.
I agree but think that, if one is a Democrat, then there is not a lot to hate there.
I think the staff articles tend to be really good. Diaries are maybe 20% trash, 20% excellent, the rest being between those poles.
Don’t know. I think the staff articles tend to present the dangers we face (where applicable) without Pollyanna-style thinking.
Here’s da thing… How many sites online are any fucking good these days anyway? I typically read kos and salon.com for the liberal perspective, then it’s onto if needed The Atlantic, The New Republic, The Nation, and The Guardian, but those sites tend not to have a whole lot of real-time coverage of stuff. Slate.com used to be good for politics but has fallen far from its heights.
There’s a difference between hating it and treating it with the skepticism it, like all explicitly biased sources, deserves. Keep linking to it if you want, but people are going to keep pointing out that it is by definition not an objective source. And if you’re linking to what’s essentially some dude’s blog, expect even more pushback.
Kos doesn’t get a free pass just because it’s liberal and so am I.
This feels to me like it’s getting away from the core question about whether or not Trump will be the GOP nominee (obviously he will, I mean, come on), so I started a new thread.
He’s already trying to court other leaders and burnish his foreign policy chops, such as they are. Do the leaders of other countries generally meet with the party’s non-incumbent nominees before the election? “See, he can be Presidential! Why doesn’t Biden care about Poland?”
