In the USA, we imprisoned Japanese & Japanese-Americans. Men, women & children born in the USA. But you could tell they were “different” by looking at them. Imprisoning or overseeing foreign nationals in a time of war is one thing–this is considered a shameful episode in our history.
What you have been “experiencing” is not just terrorism–but the presence of non-white people in your countries. How many came from your former colonies? Yes, we know that racists & xenophobes in the UK & Europe are becoming more vocal. Shame on you.
Indeed, imprisoning Japanese citizens is one thing. Imprisoning US citizens because they presented epicanthic folds passes understanding in a democracy.
Trump is mirroring the plot from The Producers now, isn’t he - this is supposed to be an exit strategy?
Apologies, this is a modest derail but I had to address these points or it would nag at me all day.
Really? Like the way Spain after 600 years of Muslim occupation was completely Muslim…oops. Or how Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia, et. al. became 100% Muslim after 300 years of Ottoman Muslim rule…er, no, try again. And I use these older items because you cannot find a recent example of a Muslim nation conquering and occupying a Christian nation.
And Jews lived (albeit, like their felow religionists in Europe, in ghettos) in Islam until the formation of Israel in 1948.
You really do need, like Trump, to read at least a little history beyond 30 years ago…
And who, pray tell, is doing most of the dying on the ground in Syria and Iraq to combat ISIS? Hint: It ain’t the Crusaders in their F-15’s and MIG’s, pal.
Look, there is an issue with terrorism and it is focused on radical Muslims; I grant that. But to take Trumps’ “remedy” or try to do what we did with Japanese-Americans in 1942 is to regress to a less-intelligent, more-reactive policy that will make us a mean, less civilized version of what we have worked (and struggled) to attain in this country.
And I for one am not willing to cede it: Not to terrorists, and not to Donald Trump.
I’m grateful for trump’s loony pronouncements. It helps smoke out the bad Americans. Sometimes bad Americans can hide and blend in with the others, but Trump’s got them coming out cheering and stomping.
Remember that whole kerfuffle when some right-wing talking head claimed that Birmingham (UK) was a “no-go” area because of t3h M00slims? Remember the international derision that followed?
I would be more willing to give him credit but I think that the Republicans finally noticed that Trump is finally down in the polling of the early primary estates so there is no need to appeal to the troglodyte wing of the party now.
From the remarks I am reading your thinking seems to be 6-7 years behind us in the U.K. 6-7 years ago in the U.K. we have a group called the E.D.L. warning us about the growth of Islam within the U.K. the result was a smear campaign led by a left wing government shouting racism, Islamophobia, religious hatred etc. sadly the claims by the E.D.L. have been proved correct in several court cases, another group Faith Freedom International a group founded by ex-Muslims have been issuing the same warnings. The U.S.A. has likened the U.K. to a Islamic aircraft carrier of the coast of mainline Europe. History books are fine and they can be useful in helping us not to repeat the mistakes of the past. Just as an exercise try using the word Nazi instead of Islamism, all the same intolerance and hatred is there. The attacks are not only on Christians have a look at the suffering of Sikh’s, Hindu’s and Buddhist’s at the hands of Islam
I’m still somewhat convinced that this is all a massive troll on the part of Trump.
I expect him to keep pushing this as far as he possibly can. He’s already talked about a national identification database for Muslims living in the US. Next, will be him issuing a policy statement that merely keeping Muslims out is not enough, and we need to keep all of these “American” Muslims together in one place, so we can keep an eye on them.
Sort of a series of places where they can all live together - an encampment, so to speak. And he’ll have lots and lots of people who absolutely LOVE this idea.
I think he’s going to keep pushing this as far as he can, just to see how far he can push the lunatic fringe of the Republican Party. Then he’ll have his “big reveal”, where he laughs at them.
Just think - the Trump International Internment Facility. It’ll be the biggest, most luxurious concentration camp you’ve ever seen! It’s gonna be YUUUUUUUUGE!
A fair point, septimus; and the Turks’ unwillingness to own up to the genocide is definitely not a point in their favor (albeit the US regarding Native Americans and the Japanese in China in WWII have also had there ‘er’ and ‘um’ moments).
But I ***was ***careful in choosing my words “conquering and occupying a Christian nation” and Armenia at the time (1914-1918) was a province of the Ottomans, along with other parts of Armenia being occupied by Russia and Persia. Not a nation-state.
And I would note that a million Christians *were living *in Ottoman (Islamic) lands to be massacred, instead of having been forcibly converted over the centuries. So I think my original rebuttal stands.
And to relate it back to the thread; Trump (and a significant number of his fans) know nothing about the long and complex history between Islam and Western Christianity (which doesn’t even begin to get into the story of the eastern Church…)
I can’t put my finger on what exactly Trump’s strategy is. On the heels of what was deemed a pretty weak Obama speech from both sides, Trump immediately pulled all media attention back to himself. He has to have known his remarks would energize a small subset of his base support (whoever that is), but that the rest of the GOP, including other candidates, would speak against him. I have to assume that’s exactly what he wanted, but I don’t know why.
Frankly, I think Cruz had the best response. I disagree with the proposal, let’s move on.
