Trump's Republican primary campaign

Well, in all fairness Cruz is a pussy.

His book says Muslims consider any Muslim father’s son to be a Muslim?

Its perfectly true that in many islamic majority countries your religion is recorded on your birth certificate. And if your father is a muslim you’ll be recorded as being a muslim. That may mean you face criminal charges for apostasy if you try and convert later. If Obama was born in Indonesia then yes he would have been recorded as a muslim at birth. I have no idea if British Kenya had registration of religion at birth, possibly not being a colony at the time.

Of course he was born in Hawaii so its not relevant, but there is some truth to this claim.

Then why did you bring it up?

But, is it a matter of doctrine, such that mullahs would agree that Muslims would be obliged to see Obama as a Muslim (apostasized)?

And that was not the most offensive thing he said in that clip. I’d rather have a President who calls people pussies once in a while than one who thinks waterboarding is a swell idea.

His book includes his background, which is relevant, as are the backgrounds of all candidates and politicians.

But, we are not discussing the relevance of Obama having a Muslim father, which I’m sure is in his book, but the relevance of this factoid that any Muslim father’s child is a Muslim. To whom is that relevant, and why?

What is the passage you’re thinking of, where he talks about the relevance of his father’s Islam to himself? I have the book here, unfortunately lacking an index. I do recall him talking about being “the black man, son of Africa.” Not about being Muslim.

Could we please take the Obama background to a different thread?

It’s relevant in that it’s apparently something Trumpers are still talking about, for some reason, even though the end of Obama’s term will soon make it irrelevant if it ever was relevant.

Huh? Of course we are discussing that, the article you posted cited a Trump supporter referencing that fact regarding Obama. The article presented it as if it was a distortion, when it’s a fact. That’s all I pointed out, and don’t know why you feel you need to argue with this, it’s simple.

Of course there is not one 100 percent clear answer, but I believe the majority of imams and mufti’s would say yes he was:

And here:
The Shaafa‘i scholar an-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The one whose parents, or one of them, are Muslim is also regarded as a Muslim with regard to rulings concerning the hereafter and worldly matters. End quote from Sharh Muslim, 16/208

Also, they would not have accepted his mother as being a Christian. Wives must convert to islam when marrying a muslim man. In their eyes she was just a non practising muslim. Understand that I’m an Obama supporter and a Democrat, but it is true that (according to many muslims), he would be seen as being born a muslim. I have no doubt whatsoever that he’s not one now.

Well, Trump is for waterboarding and more.

STEPHANOPOULOS: As president, you would authorize torture?

TRUMP: I would absolutely authorize something beyond waterboarding. And believe me, it will be effective. If we need information, George, you have our enemy cutting heads off of Christians and plenty of others, by the hundreds, by the thousands.

Why not waterboard? [Eric Trump says it’s pretty much what goes on in frat houses all the time!

Oh, for fuck’s sake. Here is the quote:

It is “undeniable” only if you accept the premise that whatever Muslims decree must be the truth. Since I am fairly confident any Trump supporter does not accept that premise, the statement is total bullshit.

Right. If a Scientology claimed that anyone born with a last name starting with C is a born Scientologist, people would say “Who the fuck are the Scientologists to say that?”

It may be an interesting sociological or theological discussion. It doesn’t actually create reality.

Yes, and to put a finer point on it, the statement gives Obama a *claim *to being a Muslim from birth. It doesn’t require him to stake that claim. Obama is a Christian because he says he is.

I think you are having some trouble parsing the sentence. It is undeniable “in that sense”, as in the sense that “Islam is traced patrilineally”, which it is.

If that were the case the comparable statement would be: “According to Scientology anyone born with a last name starting with C is considered to be born a Scientologist. In that sense, Jimmy Carter was born a Scientologist.”

The particular Trump supporter who made that statement is more knowledgeable about Islam than many of the people posting in this thread (I’d guess that he is a veteran who has spent time in Muslim majority countries). And it’s obvious that this makes some people here very uncomfortable, thus the overcompensation that we are witnessing here in the form of feigned incredulity.
