truth in labeling, pny technologies

i bought a flash drive made by pny technologies.
the package label said: attache’ - a portable, reusable flash drive
that is fully compatible with usb 1.1 and 2.0 systems. simply plug attache
into an avaiable usb port and it will be recognized as a hard drive - no
drivers needed*! achieve blazing data transfer speeds of up to 12 mb/sec
with usb 1.1 and up to 480 mb/sec with usb2 attache.

package contents: attache drive . driver cd (manual on cd) 3 ft usb cable
lanyard

*(drivers necessary on windows operating systems 98/98 se)
the label should have said:“this product will only work with the lastest versions of windows. there is no software enclosed, and our web site will not supply the proper drivers to operate the product. if you are running an older version of windows, tough luck. tech support will persuade to to spend long periods of time
downloading program updates that you really do not need, then tell you that
the product will not work with your system.”

I know those Microsofties are weird about this sort of thing, but isn’t Windows 98 a good six years old?

Well, yeah, but Windows XP is too bloated and crap to run on a five-year-old computer. (I’m still running Windows Me, hee hee)

Anyway, longhair, I believe you can get the proper drivers from PNY Tech’s backwards European cousins.

Of course, I believe a lot of crazy shit.

friend friedo,

i have some technical pplications that will not run on any operating system newer than windows 98. windows xp has no dos support.

friend larry mudd,

i returned the pny drive as a defective product, and i plan to find a thumb drive that actually performs as advertised

If that’s all that’s holding you back, you can always dual-boot or run windows 95 under a virtualpc session.* Technology isn’t going to stay in the same place forever–you’ll have to upgrade eventually.

  • I highly recommend this, by the way. Cool program.
