:smack: Mark 7:6-13
“He answered and said unto them, Well hath Isaiah prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoreth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition. For Moses said, Honor thy father and thy mother; and, whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death: But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free. And ye suffer him no more to do aught for his father or his mother; Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.”
:dubious: What group honor God with their lips?
 What group worship God by teach church doctrines instead of the The Word of God?
No wonder the world is the way it is Today, because God’s Word was taken out of the churches to make room for mens doctrines!
.
Will Truth every be told inside of a Christian church?
OK, so what do you suggest we do instead of whatever the hell it is you think is wrong at the moment?
Since humans decided what the word of God is, one has to remember that one is not quoting God, but another human, and when you use a Bible quote you are just quoting a Human, not a God. It is the humans word you desire to believe not God.

John 18:
Jesus answered, " In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me."
38"What is truth?" Pilate asked.
Certainly Christianity is guilty of clinging to the doctrines and traditions of men and preaching them as truth. Too many honor Christ with their lips while their hearts are far from him and they don’t truly practice what he taught.
It’s all part of the human process of emotional, intellectual, and spiritual growth. All people, regardless of label, are a mix of positive and negative qualities, truth and falsehoods. Within Christianity there are also many wonderful compassionate loving individuals who truly give of themselves to others. There are people helping to move mankind forward.
I think Truth is told inside of a Christian church on a fairly regular basis. I’ve been there when a preacher speaks to the heart of the human condition and what our response should be.
Along with those moments there is all the bullshit that goes along with most major organized religions. Living in the south and dealing with pastors and church committees at work I’ve encountered the meek, and the money changers. Welcome to humanity. Hallelujah!
No, or it wouldn’t be Christian any more.
It has been my experience that everyone who uses the King James translation, particularly in this type of context, knows almost nothing about the history of the Bible, its evolution through various manuscripts, its canonization, and its utter dependence on the vicissitudes of history. This is a truth which is unlikely to be told inside of your definition of a Christian church.
This lack of knowledge around the text you are quoting diminishes its impact on your audience and tends to brand you a simpleton. I recognize that part of the same personality is to accept the suffering commensurate with the world’s blindness toward the truth you are presenting and the labels they put on you, but unfortunately, most of the posters here will see you nevertheless as a simpleton.
<snort!>
What, so if someone in the church says “It’s sunny out today, isn’t it?” when the sun is indeed shining, the whole of Christianity will come tumbling down?
I did NOT grow-up within any church, therefore I may well appear as a simpleton, but that does NOT change the Truth. If any Christian really cared at all about this, then they would bring it to light that the only ones condemend to “Lake of Fire”, Hell or whatever you guys call it, could escape. If they repent from their error, which was appointed by God, then they can be forgiven.
:smack: I am sorry for trying to do this by talking as a simpleton, but in the end we will all know the Truth and I can wait!
egrow, would you be kind enough to explain your position/proposal/debate in a little more detail? At the moment, it isn’t clear at all what you’re trying to say.
You are quoting text which you have accepted as Truth without doing any due diligence as to how that text came to exist.
Your choice of that particular text is entirely arbitrary, and your acceptance of it as Truth without doing any research is simple-minded.
If you were in India and were given the text for the Bhagavad Gita, would you accept it blindly, on Faith? Confucius?
Well, the truth about Christianity then. And you could have said the same thing to him.
Cut me some slack here; how could I resist a straight line like that ?
OK, he was asking for it - and given the general incoherence and lack of actual debate, fair game.
“People always ask me about Bruce Lee. And why not? He was the biggest star Hong Kong cinema ever had at the time, an icon when he was alive and a legend after he died. He brought the martial arts movie to the attention of the world – and without him, I don’t think that anyone would ever have heard of Jackie Chan.” --I Am Jackie Chan, Jackie Chan, p. 169
Dear egrow,
If you are on a mission to reform the (or a particular) Christian Church, there are better places you could be focusing your efforts than here on the Straight Dope Message Board, as most of us here are not the ones responsible for what gets taught in church.
This kind of statement always gets me. “I don’t have any actual arguments or evidence to convince you right now, but I know I’m right regardless of the arguments and evidence you’ve presented, and at an undetermined and unverifiable time I’ll show you!”.
This is beginning to feel like testimony.
Do you think you know what this Truth is you speak of?
When you refer to the end, when we will all know the know the Truth, do you mean the end of this thread, the end of time, the end of our physical lives, what??
Yeah good point
Do you doubt the Word of Chan? Do you mock? The Roundhouse Kick awaits. Pray that it is not from the Foot of Norris.
I see. That comment was a joke and you don’t actually think you know the truth about Christianity, right?
